Warwick, R.I. – March 22, 2018: The CCRI Baseball faced a difficult task in the No. 6 Nationally ranked Heartland Hawks. Both games went way of the Hawks with the second game seeing Heartland come from behind with a walk off. The Knights fell in game one 10-2 and in game two 4-3, falling to 2-3 on the season.

CCRI – 2 Heartland – 10 (7 Innings)

CCRI were knocked back on their heels when Heartland, scoring four runs in the top of the first, jumped out of the gates sprinting. The Hawks would score another two runs before the Knights' bats awoke. CCRI would score two runs in the bottom of the third, making the score 6-2 in Heartland's favor. The Knights offense was kick started by Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, RI) going 2-3, one hit being a double while adding two RBI. Joey Barter (Smithfield, RI), Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL), Mike Castillo (Cranston, RI) and Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT) all went 1-3 in game one.

Pitching for the Knights was Jon Hemond (Pawtucket, RI), Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) and Josh Andrade (Coventry, RI). The three CCRI hurlers combined to allow five earned runs in seven innings while going on to strikeout seven batters.

In the end, errors would prove costly as the Hawks would score five runs off of CCRI errors. Heartland would go onto take game one, 10-2.

CCRI – 3 Heartland – 4 (7 Innings)

Game two was a much slower paced affair between the Knights and the Hawks. Scoring started in the second inning as both Heartland and CCRI scored one run. The Knights would score again in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth taking a 3-1 lead. At the plate, the Knights were led by Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) and Steve Cochran (Guilford, CT), both going 2-4. Cochran recorded a double while Grossguth tallied one RBI. The other two CCRI runs were knocked in by Justin Brown (Wallingford, CT) and Jake Frost (Cranston, RI).

Matt Gutelius (South Kingstown, RI) and Korey Fijal (Johnston, RI) combined to provide quality performances on the mound which kept the game tight. However, the Heartland bats could not be kept quiet as the Eagles would score one run in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the bottom of the seventh for the walk off 4-3 win.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Baseball team will face Kirkwood and Dakota County Tech for a doubleheader on Thursday March 15.
