Warwick, R.I. – January 18, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY to play the very potent Division I Mustangs for a game Wednesday evening. The Lady Knights lost to the Mustangs 79-66. With the loss the Lady Knights are now 12-8 on the season.

The Lady Knights knew they were in for a tough battle versus the perennially potent Division I Mustangs who feature a frontcourt of 6'5", 6'3" and 6'3" and a backcourt that makes about five 3-pointers a game. However, the Lady Knights are used to being the smaller squad and never back down from a challenge. CCRI fell behind to the potent Mustangs 28-19 by the end of the first quarter and realized they would have to stay in this game with long-range shooting and effective ball movement. The Lady Knights played the Mustangs much closer in the second quarter but Monroe was still able to extend their lead by two more points as they outscored CCRI 19-17 for a halftime score of 47-36. CCRI was led by sophomore D'Asia Allen (Providence, RI) in the first half who scored 12 points including three 3-pointers and Co-Captain Tiondra Hands (Boynton, Beach, FL) who added 11 first half points.

In the second half the Lady Knights dealt with some tough defense which only allowed them to score 12 points but only allowed 16 from Monroe in the third quarter sending the Mustangs into the fourth quarter leading by 15 points 63-48. Monroe extended its lead to as many as 20 points in the final quarter but the Lady Knights battled back to cut the lead to nine points with under three minutes remaining but Monroe answered the challenge from CCRI and went on to win by the final score of 79-66.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Co-Captain Tiondra Hands who scored a game-high 22 points including four three pointers with four assists and a steal and D'Asia Allen added 12 points with three 3-pointers and two assists. Also having a good game for CCRI was Co-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) who scored 11 points including two 3-pointers with four assist and three steals and Nia Mims (Bethlehem, PA) added eight points to the Lady Knights' offense.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Friday when they will travel to Auburn, ME to play the Mustangs of Central Maine Community College at 6pm.
