Lady Knight defeat Massasoit 7-0!

Warwick, R.I. – September 21, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights women’s soccer team faced-off against the Massasoit Community College Warriors from Brockton, MA yesterday at the Lincoln Campus soccer complex in a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights won 7-0. With the win the Lady Knights improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Region XXI play. The next game for the Lady Knights on Thursday the 22 nd at 4pm will be live streamed on the Rhode Island Sports Network.

Freshman forward Mercedes Faust (Warwick, RI) scored twice in a seven minute span to give CCRI a quick 2-0 lead. Sophomore Co-Captain Natalie Gallucci (Coventry, RI) assisted on both goals. In the last minute of play in the first half freshman forward Precious Leaman (Providence, RI) scored an unassisted goal to give the Lady Knights a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

As the second half of play began CCRI continued to dominate the Warriors in all facets of the game. In the thirteenth minute of play freshman forward Laura Lopes (Warren, RI) scored on a rebound off of a shot by freshman midfielder Ciara Conway (Seekonk, MA) giving the Lady Knights a 4-0 advantage. In the next fifteen minutes of play freshman midfielder Ciara Conway scored twice with both assists going to Mercedes Faust. With a 6-0 lead and things well in hand the Lady Knights were awarded a penalty shot. Co-Captain Kaitlin Murrin (Norton, MA) tallied the score giving CCRI a 7-0 advantage. As play resumed the Lady Knights were content with lots of possession and passing of the ball. Massasoit could not get past the CCRI defense for any threatening scoring chances throughout the entire match.

Leading scorers in the match were Mercedes Faust with two goals and two assists and Ciara Conway with two goals and an assist. Defender Natalie Gallucci garnered two assists. Goalkeeper Ashley VanBemmelen (North Providence, RI) didn’t have much activity on the day but recorded her second shutout victory in as many games.

Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game, “Coach Bannan and I are pleased with what we saw from our team today. They played solid defense and the offense was very aggressive and they managed to execute some of the things we’ve been working on during weekly training. Hopefully they will carry these things over to the next game on Thursday against Holyoke CC.”

The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Thursday September 22 nd when they will host the very potent Holyoke Community College team that is 2-0 in Region XXI play at 4pm at the CCRI Soccer Complex in Lincoln, RI.
