Warwick, R.I. – July 16, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights soccer team hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College form Charlestown, MA. The Lady Knights defeated BHCC 10-0. The Lady Knights played their final home game of the 2016 season. Their five sophomores: Faithe Fernandes (North Providence, RI), Ashley Van Bemmelen (North Providence, RI), Kaitlin Murrin (Norton, MA), Natalie Gallucci (Coventry, RI), and Samantha Canales (Cranston, RI) were honored before the match for their two years of hard work and dedication to the program
Bunker Hill was no match for the Lady Knights as CCRI dominated the game from start to finish. With goals from Faithe Fernandes who scored two, Precious Leaman (Providence, RI) who also scored two, and Gabrielle Caruso (Cranston, RI), CCRI took a 5-0 halftime advantage.
The second half of play was not much different as the Lady Knights scored five more times on goals from team leading scorer Mercedes Faust (Warwick, RI) scored twice, Kaitlin Murrin, Samantha Canales, and Gabrielle Caruso also added to the 10-0 onslaught. Goalkeeper Ashley Van Bemmelen notched her fifth shutout victory of the season. Leading point getters on the day were Co-Captain Kaitlin Murrin with a goal and four assists, Precious Leaman, Gabrielle Caruso, and Mercedes Faust each garnering two goals apiece on the day.
Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the match: “Today was a day to honor our sophomores in which coach Bannan and I are truly grateful for. They have shown tremendous dedication, hard work, and leadership this season. It’s always sad to see our sophomores play their final home game and leave the program.”
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
