Warwick, R.I. – November 9, 2016: the CCRI Lady Knights Volleyball Team (22-5) won the NJCAA Division II Volleyball District L Championship versus Harcum College (15-11) from Bryn Mawr, PA on Sunday. The District Championship earned them a berth in the NJCAA DII National Championship Tournament in Charleston, West Virginia Nov 17-19th. The seeding has been announced form the National and the Lady Knights are the No. 16 seed and will face the No 1 seed and No 1 ranked (NJCAA DII volleyball poll) Cobras of Parkland College (42-2) at 1pm Thursday November 17th.
The Lady Knights return to the National Championship for the first time since 2008 when the Lady Knights went 38-6 under former Head Coach Ray DeAngelis. This will be the first trip to the National Championship under Head Coach Sam Amaral. CCRI has authored another excellent season with an impressive 22-5 record with key victories over Howard College, Region XIX Champion Delaware Tech twice and Region XIX runner-up Harcum College twice. The Lady Knights have garnered success through playing excellent defense and at the service line. CCRI is ranked No.1 by the NJCAA Division II Volleyball statistics in digs per set with 23.54 Digs per set. The Lady Knights are also ranked No.3 in aces per set with 2.96 aces per set. The Lady Knights have a very difficult match-up against the Cobras who were ranked No.1 in every NJCAA poll except 9/20/16 where they were ranked No. 2.
Parkland a perennial volleyball powerhouse with a 42-2 record and their two losses this year came versus Division I No. 6 ranked Indian Hills. The Cobras are ranked No.1 by the NJCAA in Kills (2,211), Kills per set (13.99), Hitting percentage (.370), assists (2,014), assists per set (12.75), Block assists (851), Total blocks (510), Points (3,051.5) and Points per set (19.3). Parkland’s dominance has been remarkable this year having lost only 10 sets of the 157 they played this year.
The National Tournament begins Thursday November the 17th with the CCRI Lady Knights facing the Cobras of Parkland at 1pm. The winner of that match will play at 7:30 the 17th versus the winner of Central vs Scottsdale match. The loser of that match will play Friday at 10am versus the loser of the Central Scottsdale match.
