Warwick, R.I. – January 27, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights Basketball Team traveled to UConn-Avery Point (UCAP) in Groton, CT to play the Pointers for a game Thursday evening in a Region XXI showdown. The Lady Knights beat the Pointers 79-61. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 11-12 on the season.
The Lady Knights were out to avenge their 81-73 loss to the Pointers back on December 4th when they played in Warwick. In this game the Lady Knights utilized long-range shooting by making twelve 3-pointers while shooting 45% of their shots form beyond the arc to beat the taller UCAP squad. CCRI jumped out to a 24-12 lead after the first quarter and never really looked back as they outscored the Pointers 20-12 in the second to take a 44-24 lead into the halftime break. They once again outscored UCAP in the third quarter 24-17 to extend their lead to 27-points with the score 68-41. The Lady Knights took their foot of the gas pedal in the fourth where UCAP outscored them 20-11 but with the comfortable lead CCRI won by the final count of 79-61.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was D’Asia Allen (Providence, RI) who was tied for the team-high in scoring with 19 points including five 3-pointers with nine rebounds, five assist, two steals and a blocked shot followed by Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) who also scored 19 points with three 3-pointers seven rebounds, two assist, a steal and a blocked shot. Also playing very well for CCRI was Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, FL) who was the third Lady Knight with 19 points with two 3-pointers while adding six assists, three steals and three rebounds, Angela Velleco (Coventry, RI) charted career-highs with nine points, nine rebounds five steals and two assists. Rounding out the CCRI stat line was Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) with nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals and Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) had four points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be Saturday when they host the Colts of Orange County CC from Middletown, NY at 12noon as part of a doubleheader with the Knights who will play Roxbury at 2:00pm.
