Warwick, R.I. – January 23, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights Basketball team traveled to Nassau Community College in Long Island City, NY to play the Lions for a game on Saturday. The Lady Knights lost to the Lions 73-65. With the loss CCRI falls to 10-12 on the season.
The Lady Knights did not shoot well and committed too many turnovers to overcome the Lions in this tough road contest. CCRI did not play poorly but were just a bit too inefficient to pull out the victory. Though the percentages were not in their favor they did get another impressive outing from their freshman Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) who posted her second consecutive Triple-double. The Lady Knights also got another big scoring day from freshman Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, FL) who scored over 20 points for her second consecutive game. Unfortunately that was not enough as they only shot 34% from the floor and 22% from beyond the 3-point arc and committed 19 turnovers which is not a recipe for success.
The Lady Knights trailed by just two points 16-14 after one quarter and three points by halftime 38-35. But their output in the third quarter would doom them in the end as they were outscored 18-10 to trail 56-45 going into the final quarter. The Lady Knights outscored the Lions 20-17 in the final quarter but did not get enough stops to overcome the Lions who won by the final score of 73-65.
Leading the way for CCRI was Kelsey Hernandez with her second Triple-double consisting of 16 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists to go with a game-high six steals. Hernandez was aided by Tiondra Hands who scored 22 points including four 3-pointers with seven assists and four steals. Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez (Pawtucket, RI) also played well scoring 12 points with six rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals and D’Asia Allen (Providence, RI) added 10 points with two 3-pointers, five rebounds, two assist and two steals.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Thursday when they travel to Groton, CT to play the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point for a game at 5:00pm as part of a doubleheader with the Knights who will play at 7:00pm.
