Warwick, R.I. – January 17, 2016: The CCRI Men’s Basketball team took on Union County College on Sunday. This was the second game the Knights would play in the CCRI Invitational. The Knights were able to control the game from start to finish, and come out of the game with a comfortable 100-82 victory. The victory brought the Knights overall record to 10-8, and had them go 1-1 on the weekend.
The Knights came out of the gate on fire. They were able to create a seven-point lead within three minutes of the game starting at 9-2. This was a lead the Knights were able to hold throughout the whole game, and continued to build on. With 10 minutes left in the first half, the Knights had extended their lead to 12 at 25-17. Even with the lead building, the Knights continued to work hard on the defensive end, coming up with multiple stops. They continued with their scoring groove and were able to extend the lead to 19 at half. The Knights had opened it up to 53-34.
The second half was much of the same as the first half. The Knights were able to control their lead and make sure the game was never in danger. Union County was able to make a few runs throughout the half, but the Knights never let the pressure get to them. Any time there was a run made by the Owls, the Knights were able to take the pressure, stick to their game, and extend their lead again. The lead was never lower than 13. The Knights had a strong showing with a wire to wire victory, with a final score of 100-82.
This was the first time all season that the Knights have reached 100 points. This was largely due to the scoring by Edvaldo Ferreira (Praia, Cape Verde) and Adrian La Fleur (Sydney, Australia). Ferreira followed up his 23 point 19 rebound showing the night before with a 23 point 14 rebound performance. He also had one block on the night. Adrian La Fleur came back from an illness that kept him out the night before and had a strong showing in his return. La Fleur also scored 23 points on the night. He hit five of his eight three point attempts. He also contributed seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals on the night. Kevin Paygai (West Warwick, RI) and Elijah Vazquez (Woonsocket, RI) rounded out the scorers in double figures. Paygai scored 11 while assisting on seven Knights baskets. Vazquez scored 12 points, while having five rebounds and four assists.
The Knights are off until Thursday when they will travel to Haverhill, Massachusetts to take on Northern Essex Community College, where it will be the battle of the Knights!
