Warwick, R.I. – December 14, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Wolverines of Essex County College from Newark, NJ for a game on Tuesday evening. The Lady Knights lost a hotly contested battle with the Wolverines 61-57. With the loss the CCRI falls to 7-8 on the season.
The Lady Knights knew this would be a tough contest after losing to them in Newark, NJ by 33 points 91-58. In addition, CCRI was playing without two important members of their frontcourt: Dionna Jackson and Tri-Captain Carol Rodriguez. However, CCRI would be the home team today and look to change the outcome.
The Lady Knights played much better in this contest opposed to their first meeting. In the First quarter The Wolverines got the best of the Lady Knights outscoring them 16-11 with hot shooting from Janya Henderson who led Essex with five first quarter points. in the second quarter the Lady Knights began to build momentum with some hot shooting form Ashley VanBemmelen (North Providence, RI) who scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter including a 3-pointer and Tiondra Hands (Delray Beach, FL) added five points to account for 15 of CCRI’s 16 second quarter points to pull the Lady Knights tied with Essex 27-27 as they went into the halftime break.
In the third quarter both teams traded baskets with Essex gaining a slim margin outscoring CCRI 15-14. The Lady Knights got great contributions from Tri-Captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT) who scored six points on two 3-pointers and D’Asia Allen (Providence, RI) added four points. As both teams headed to the final quarter Essex held the narrow 42-41 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. CCRI kept battling in the fourth but the combination of inside and outside scoring from Essex was difficult to overcome. Two 3-pointers from D’Asia Allen and one from Ashley VanBemmelen while Tri-Captain Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) added six points on mid-range jumpers and free throws kept it close. However in the end Essex escaped with the 61-57 victory.
Leading the way for CCRI was Ashley VanBemmelen with a game-high 19 points including three 3-pointers followed by D’Asia Allen who scored 12 points including two 3-pointers. Also helping the Lady Knights was Mackenzie Brayman with eight points, Tiondra Hands with seven points while Kelsey Hernandez added six points to the CCRI attack.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be Thursday when the will host the Rams of the Naval Academy Prep School to the Cullen Fieldhouse in Warwick, RI at 5pm.
