Warwick, R.I. – April 10, 2017: The CCRI Knights traveled to South Portland, Maine to take on the Seawolves of Southern Maine Community College in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Knights swept the doubleheader in impressive fashion. The victories bring the Knights’ record to 15-3 on the season.
Game 1: CCRI- 7 SMCC- 4
The first game was a back and forth offensive affair. Deiviz Lara (Santo Domingo, DR) put the Knights ahead early with a first inning double, playing Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, OK). The Seawolves tied the game with a second inning home run. The Knights and Seawolves continued to trade runs until it was 3-3 in the fifth inning. Garnell Bell (Bridgeport, CT) came up to bat and delivered for the Knights. With one out and two men in scoring position, Bell singled to give the Knights a 5-3 lead. Bell later scored on a throwing error by the Seawolves catcher. The Knights and Seawolves each scored one more run in the closing innings to give the Knights a 7-4 victory.
Matt Kennedy (Johnston, RI) started the game for the Knights, earning his first win of the season. Kennedy went four innings, allowing two hits and three earned runs. He struck out six batters on the day. Dave Simmons (Warwick, RI) relieved Kennedy in the fifth inning. Simmons pitched the final three innings, allowing three hits and one run. Every out Simmons recorded on the day was a strikeout, totaling nine.
The Knights were led by Deiviz Lara who had three hits, one RBI and one a stolen base. Garnell Bell, Ernesto Figueroa (Providence, RI), and Billy Bostick (Cedar Park, TX) each chipped in with two hits apiece. Bell had two RBIs, while Figueroa and Bostick each had one.
Game 2: CCRI- 11 SMCC- 1
The second game started out the same for the Knights, who continue to strike early. The first batter of the game was Joe Michael (Johnston, RI), who hit a home run. Michael continued his great start in the second inning when he tripled, scoring Sam Franco (Cranston, RI) and Billy Bostick. The Knights continued to score throughout the game, while the pitching only allowed one run. The second game was never in doubt, and the Knights cruised to an 11-1 victory.
On the mound, the Knights were led by Shane Kittila (Warwick, RI). Kittila pitched five strong innings, scattering seven hits and only allowing one run. He struck out five batters, on his way to earning the victory. Max Marcotte (Coventry, RI) came in to close out the game, and did not allow a base runner. He struck out one batter.
Joe Michael led the Knights at the plate, hitting for the cycle. His single in the top of the seventh inning earned him the honor. He had four hits on the day, with four RBIs and two runs scored. Matt Gutelius (South Kingstown, RI) also hit a home run, driving in three batters. Billy Bostick and Garnell Bell each continued their strong afternoon with three hits each.
Head Coach Ken Hopkins was happy with the win after a tough doubleheader last Sunday. He felt the team came out prepared and ready for the challenge. The two wins brought the Knights’ record to 15-3 on the year. They will look to continue their winning ways as they take on Northern Essex on Monday afternoon at 3:30. The game will be played at Whitey Fell Field on the Warwick Campus at CCRI. Come out and support your Knights!
