Warwick, R.I. – September 21, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team hosted the second day of the CCRI Volleyball Classic on Sunday. They went 1-1 on Sunday and 3-3 for the invitational . With the split the Lady Knights are now 7-6 on the season.
Once again the Lady Knights were in a must win situation to have a chance to advance to the semifinals. Masking it more difficult FIT went undefeated Saturday so the task of winning was going to be difficult. Head Coach Sam Amaral head CCRI ready and commented “We knew FIT had some great hitters and even better servers. We wanted this so much! I was so proud to see my girls finally get it. They started to talk more, play as team, and fight as a team. Game three had everyone on the edge of the seats. It was back and forth the entire game. The Lady Knights wanted it just that much more and we were able to take the win.” Amanda LaCroix (East Freetown, MA) played absolutely lights out! She was a definite game changer in this match. She finished with an impressive 11 Kills, 12 Digs and three Aces. Sophia Mazzocca (Lakeville, MA) finished with six kills and two aces. April Von (Providence, RI) had 16 digs, three assist and an ace. Co-Captain Emily Taylor (South Kingstown, RI) turned in some great setting to turn this match around for CCRI with 20 Assists and three Aces.
The Lady Knights advance to a play-in versus DI power Harford in a single game to 15 points to decide who reaches the semifinals. CCRI was victorious 16-14 and advanced to the semifinals. Coach Amaral commented “These girls played SO hard this game!”
The Lady Knights were up against Howard for the third time this season they had beaten them at Howard but fell to them Saturday in the Classic so this was the rubber match. Coach Amaral commented “You know I can’t be upset with this match. I knew my girls wanted it. They fought so hard to get to the Semi’s. I think they ran out of gas after game two and just couldn’t finish the match out. Howard was ready to take the game. With some aggressive services and key blocks Howard took the Semifinals from the Lady Knight. Over all we went 3-3 this weekend, played hard and played to win. I am so proud of the way they pulled together as a unit.” Co-Captain Emily Taylor had 20 Assists.
