Warwick, R.I. – February 10, 2016: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Lions of Gateway CC on Tuesday evening for a Region XXI non-league game. The Lady Knights lost a heartbreaker in Overtime 79-78. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 13-15 on the season.
This game was nip and tuck throughout the entire contest with no team gaining a clear advantage throughout the entire game. Gateway utilized their size to begin the game and took the largest lead of the game 9-2 but Lady Knights’ Captain Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, CT) sank a 3-pointer to cut eh lead to four points. Both teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter to give Gateway the 20-15 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter the Lady Knights used a balanced attack with six players making the scoring column led by Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY), Mackenzie Brayman (North Stonington, CT) and Alexis Antonacci (Plainview, NY) who scored five points each in the quarter to give CCRI a 37-34 lead at halftime!
In the third quarter Kennethah Harden went OFF! After scoring 11 first half points Harden put the team on her back as she poured in 18 of CCRI’s 22 third quarter points to help extend the Lady Knights lead by a point as they outscored Gateway 22-21 in the third to take a 59-55 lead going into the fourth. However, Gateways Katrina DePugh was also having a career night, scoring 35 points with 22 rebounds to keep her Lions close. In the fourth quarter Gateway got off to a quick start scoring the first six points to take a two point lead 61-59 just two minutes into the quarter. The Lions continued to utilize their two six footers inside to out rebound the Lady Knights top extend their lead to six points 69-63 with only a couple minutes left in the game. Sophomore Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) sank two free throws to cut the lead to four points. With less than a minute remaining Kennethah Harden sank another basket to bring CCRI within two points but they still needed a stop at the defensive end. The Lady Knights forced a turnover and pushed the ball up the court with no timeouts remaining. After a missed 3-pointer from Alexis Antonacci, Harden was able to put in a put back with just 7.4 remaining. However, GCC advanced the ball across half court to draw up their final play. Once again CCRI forced a turnover on the inbound play but missed a Hail Mary attempt at the buzzer sending the game to overtime tied at 69-69.
In overtime both teams traded the lead and with under a minute left in the five minute frame CCRI trailed 77-76 but CCRI Captain Haley Beausoleil sank a mid-range jumper on the win to give CCRI the 78-77 lead with less the thirty second left. Gateway’s Ava Harris was able to weaver her way to the basket to give the Lions the 79-78 lead. With 10.1 left CCRI had the ball and Head Coach Brittany Brown drew-up a play to try and get the game-winner. Lyric Artis got the ball in the corner and drove baseline but her attempt went in and out and after a scramble to get the rebound Gateway came away with the ball and the hard-fought victory.
Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Kennethah Harden who had her best game in her young career, recording her 21st double-double in MONSTER fashion. Harden scored a career-high 37 points to go with an amazing 24 rebounds while adding four steals and two assists. In doing so Harden set a new single season rebounding record with 358 career rebounds besting the mark of Nyjah Porcher whom has 343. In addition, Harden went above the 500 point mark and now has 501 points in her freshman campaign. She is ranked No.12 in the NJCAA in Division II with 12.4 rebounds per game and 34th in scoring with 17.6 points per game.
Also helping CCRI was Captain Haley Beausoleil who scored seven points including the basket that sent the game into overtime with three rebounds, two assists and a steal and Lyric Artis with eight points, four rebounds and a steal. Rounding out the top performers for CCRI was Mackenzie Brayman with eight points, four rebounds and four steals and Alexis Antonacci with eight points, four rebounds and four assists.
The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Thursday when they host the Pointers of UConn-Avery Point at 5:00pm at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse in Warwick.
