Lady Knights lose Heart Breaker to Tohono O'odham 64-63

Warwick, R.I. – December 30, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Jegos (pronounced Jugos) of Tohono O’odham [pronounced To’hono Otham (like Gotham City)] from Sells, AZ on Tuesday in the first ever game in the CCRI Holiday Classic. The Lady Knights lost the Jegos 63-64 in a heartbreaker as last second shot from Maritza Gustave (Fall River, MA) goes half way in before rimming out. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 9-10 on the season.

The Lady Knights began the game slowly, playing their first game in 10 days which led to the Jegos taking an early 18-10 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Knights began to gain momentum in the second quarter as they outscored the Jegos 21-13 to tie the game 31-31 at the half. Once again Tohono was able to gain the early advantage in the third quarter leading by as many as eight points with the score 43-35 but the Lady Knights were able to cut the lead to three points 52-49 to end the quarter. The game was tight from there on out as CCRI took their first second half lead on a 3-pointer from Co-Captain Haley Beausoleil (Plainfield, CT) making the score 60-58 CCRI. Shortly after CCRI took the lead the Jegos regained the advantage on a 3-pointer form Darcy Earnhart making the score 63-61 Jegos. The Lady Knights tied the score 63-63 on a basket by Kennethah Harden (Roosevelt, NY) with under a minute left in the game. Tohono regained a one point advantage on 1-2 free throws from Marqueisha Reed. Lady Knights’ Head Coach Brittany Brown called a timeout to set a final play with 2.5 seconds remaining in the game on the CCRI end of the court. The Lady Knights got the ball in and swung it to Maritza Gustave who got off a 3-pointer from the wing that made it half way through the hoop before rimming out giving the Jegos the 64-63 victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Alexis Antonacci (Plainview, NY) with 16 points including two 3-pointers followed by Kennethah Harden with 14 points and six rebounds. They were helped by their Co-Captains: Haley Beausoleil with 14 points including two 3-pointers with four steals and Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) added 13 points including 8-8 from the free throw line with three assists.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be as part of the 2016 CCRI Invitational. On Saturday the 9th CCRI will face Mercer County Community College at 5:00pm and Sunday they will face the Cougars of Genesee Community College at 12noon.
