Warwick, R.I. – December 14, 2015: The CCRI Knights basketball team traveled to Genesee, NY this weekend to play in the Cougar Holiday Classic. The Knights faced off against the host team, Genesee Community College on Saturday for their first game of the weekend. CCRI was not able to beat the No. 18 ranked Cougars and took the loss by the score of 75-97. The game puts the Knights at 7-4 on the season.
The long bus trip to Genesee wasn’t made any easier when it came to playing the game. The Knights trailed by double-digits at halftime and couldn’t seem to find a way to stop the Cougars on defense. Freshman Elijah Vazquez (Woonsocket, RI) kept the Knights within range with another outstanding shooting performance. Vazquez was able to knock down six 3-pointers on his way to 18 points. He remains in the top ten for 3-pointers made per game for all NJCAA DII, sitting in ninth with 3.2 made per game. Vazquez also is currently 12th in 3-point percentage at 52.7 percent.
Freshman Tri-Captain Edvaldo Ferreira (Cape Verde) was the only other Knight to hit double digits in points as he scored 14 to go along with 11 boards and seven blocks. It was Ferreira’s eighth double-double on the year and also continued his streak of games with double digit rebounds at 10. Ferreira still leads NJCAA DII in blocks with 4.5 and sits at number two in rebounds per game with 12.6.
Head Coach Rick Harris had this to say after the loss, “Tough night overall, we didn't play or coach well. We're looking forward to regrouping quickly and getting back to the grind in tomorrow's game against Niagara.”
The Knights would play their second game of the tournament on Sunday versus Niagara County Community College at 1 pm.
