Warwick, R.I. – April 14, 2016: the CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT top take on the Pioneers club team for a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Lady Knights swept the Pioneers 5-3 and 9-3. With the sweep CCRI improves to 5-7 on the season.
In the circle for the Lady Knights was freshman Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, RI). Sheridan dominated the Pioneers while pitching seven strong innings allowing three runs, none earned on seven hits with three walks and striking out a career-high 16 Pioneer batters. She allowed two unearned runs in the second inning and an unearned run in the seventh inning was the only damage allowed by Sheridan. However in the second and fourth innings displayed her dominance by striking out the side while charting at least a strikeout in every inning while amassing her career-high of 16 while charting her third win of the season!
The Lady Knights trailed 2-0 until they got onto the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Tri-Captain Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) led-off the rally with a one-out single followed by catcher Sam Archambault (North Smithfield, RI) with a bunt single. Sheridan reached on bunt and two runs scored on an errant throw to first. Kristian Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI) added an RBI single to put the Lady Knights ahead by the score of 3-2. In the top of the sixth Archambault hit a single followed by Sheridan who reached on an error followed by a Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) RBI single making the score 4-2 CCRI. The Lady Knights added another insurance run in the top of the seventh when Jenna Beauchamp (Warwick, RI) walked and later scored on an RBI single from Jewett. Sacred Heart added a run in the seventh but it was not enough as CCRI held-on for the 5-3 victory thanks in large part to three strikeouts in the final frame from Courtney Sheridan.

In the circle for the Lady Knights in game two was Tri-Captain Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI) who pitched very well over five strong innings allowing three runs, just one of them earned on six hits while walking six and striking out for batters to chart her first victory of the season. Spargo struggled a bit with her control but was able to get out of the jams by bearing down and getting critical outs. Sacred Heart got score an earned run in the first and then two unearned runs in the fifth when CCRI had a sizeable lead as the Lady Knights won comfortably 9-3 in five innings.
After a 13-hit onslaught in the first game the Lady Knights bats got even hotter as they sprayed 15 hits in the second game en route to the 9-3 victory. CCRI scored a run in the first as Meg Rousseau and Bella Malvinni (Westerly, RI) singled and Maddy Cooper (Richmond, RI) scored Rousseau on an RBI groundout. CCRI blew the game wide open in the second with a six-run outburst. Abby Martinelli (West Greenwich, RI) walked followed by a Sam Archambault single, Martinelli stole 3rd followed by a Jewett RBI single and single from Courtney Sheridan. Kim Barker (Narragansett, RI) added a bunt single followed by a Rousseau RBI sacrifice fly. Malvinni walked followed by a 2-RBI single from pitcher Jess Spargo and 2-RBI double from Maddy Cooper making the score 7-1 CCRI. The Lady Knight added a run apiece in the fourth and fifth while the Pioneers added two in the fifth as CCRI won by the final count of 9-3.
For the day CCRI had 28 hits led by sophomore catcher Sam Archambault who went 5-7 with two runs scored and Tri-Captain Erica Jewett who also went 5-7 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Also having a big day at the plate was Meghan Rousseau with four hits three RBIs and a run scored, Courtney Sheridan added three hits and three runs scored and Tri-Captain Jess Spargo had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Rounding out the Lady Knights offensive attack was Bella Malvinni with three hits and two runs scored, Maddy Cooper with a hit and three RBIs while Kristina Rodriguez, Jenna Beauchamp, Mikayla Fernandez and Kim Barker each added a hit apiece.
The next games for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday April 16th when they host the Northeastern University Club team for a doubleheader at 12noon the NEW Winslow Park located at 300 Airport Rd Warwick, RI.
