Warwick, R.I. – April 18, 2016: The CCRI Knights continued their home stand on Saturday as they faced off against Region XXI rival Dean College. The teams played a double-header (two seven inning games), which the Knights swept with two wins by the scores of 6-5 and 5-2. The wins bring CCRI to 9-6 on the season with a 3-1 Region XXI record.
Game One: The Knights come from behind win the night before against Post was improbable, but the Knights seemed to have made it more of a trend. They fell behind Dean early and trailed for most of the game. The Knights cut the lead to 3-2 after five innings, only to see Dean score two more to push the lead to 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.
Co-Captain Brandon Escalante (Pembroke, FL) started off the inning with a quick single to get the rally going. Omaury Cortorreal (Providence, RI) and Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) both walked to load the bases up for the Knights. Travis Collins (Cranston, RI) then took one for the team as he was drilled by a pitch to move the runners along which scored Escalante. Dylan Brooks (Lookeba, OK) was able to take advantage of the situation as he blasted a single to right field that scored both Cortorreal and Davis to tie the game at five.
The teams went scoreless in the eighth and the Knights were able to hold Dean scoreless in the ninth. In the bottom of the inning the Knights didn’t take long to complete the comeback as Collins started the inning off with a single. Brooks once again came through in the clutch as this time he drilled a double to deep center field that allowed Collins to hustle all the way from first to score the winning run. Knights took game one 6-5.
Brooks went 2-4 in the game while driving in three runs. Escalante went 3-4 with a run scored while Robert Paulino (Mirimar, FL) went 2-2 with two RBI’s.
Game Two: Justin Jacobsen (Fairhaven, MA) took the mound for the Knights in game two and pitched an excellent game to earn the win. Jacobsen went all the way for the complete game while only allowing two runs and striking out five. He was able to limit any damage by only walking one batter and scattering seven hits.
The Knights bats remained quiet through the first four innings against Colby Smith who was pitching for Dean. In the bottom of the fifth, the Knights were able to string together three straight singles to load the bases with two outs. Dylan Brooks came to the plate with a chance to do some damage once again. Brooks did just that as he launched a high towering shot to right field that just kept carrying and landed over the wall for a grand slam to give the Knights a 4-2 lead. Enzo Clemente (Plantation, FL) did not wait to add to that lead for the Knights as he took the next pitched and destroyed it for a home run that traveled well over the wall in dead center. The Knights went into the sixth with a 5-2 lead.
The lead was plenty enough for Jacobsen as he finished the game quickly to complete the two game sweep of Dean on the day.
The top of the line-up was clutch for the Knights in the game as the one through five hitters all had at least one hit with Brooks and Clemente batting fourth and fifth who both homered.
