The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team hosted five teams this weekend for the 2014 CCRI Volleyball Classic Tournament: Genesee CC (NY), Fashion Institute (NY), NHTI (NH), and Bunker Hill CC (MA) versus host school CCRI. On Saturday, the Lady Knights went 2-2. CCRI defeated NHTI and Bunker Hill CC but lost to Genesee CC and Fashion Institute, earning them the No. 3 seed going into the playoff round on Sunday.

CCRI defeated NHTI: 26-28, 25-18 and 15-4

The Lady Knights came back playing with some serious passion this weekend. CCRI started-off the tournament playing NHTI once again who had swept the Lady Knights just a few days prior. Now CCRI was on their home court and they wanted this win this match big time and the Lady Knights fought hard to do so. The first game was a little frustrating as CCRI made mistakes at the wrong time. In the second and third games the Lady Knights had something to prove to themselves and did as they fought back to win 25-18 and dominated the deciding game 15-4.

Leading the way for CCRI was Co-Captain Delyn Pizzaro (Homestead, FL) who finished the game with six kills and three blocks, freshman setter Emily Taylor (South Kingstown, RI) had 20 assist and five aces, Kayleigh Clauson (Wakefield, RI) finished with 17 digs and two aces, and Co-Captain Lindsey Proulx (Warwick, RI) finished with five kills.

CCRI falls to F.I.T.: 17-25 and 21-25

“This game was frustrating to see because I knew my girls could have won.” Commented Head Coach Sam Amaral “We just made more mistakes than FIT” She added. The girls fought hard but it was just a little too late.

Delyn Pizzaro finished the game with five kills and one dig, Ormarie Colon (Providence, RI) had eight digs, and Sarah Keomorokot (Pawtucket, RI) finished with an ace and two kills. Amaral later added “We will see FIT this weekend and I know the girls want to take that game away from them.”

CCRI falls to Genesee CC: 9-25 and 15-25

“Wow, What a power house from Genesee! Our girls fought hard but were overwhelmed by the consistency and power Genesee brought to the table, this was frustrating because a lot of the reason why we lost was due to our own mistakes. They girl knew it but couldn’t break the moment of our opponent” Commented Coach Amaral. Emily Taylor (South Kingstown, RI) finished with an ace and eight assists, Delyn Pizzaro finished with three kills and Hannah Derefaka (West Warwick, RI) finished the game with three kills.

CCRI defeats Bunker Hill Community College: 25-20 and 25-9

“The Lady Knights needed this game. The girl slowed the game down and focused on what they have learned all week in practice. The girls realized that they were the better team but Bunker hill wanted it as well and was not about to give it to the Lady Knights without a fight. I am proud to say the girls fought hard and won” commented Coach Amaral after the match.

Statistically, Emily Taylor finished with four aces, 18 assist and eight digs, Hannah Derefaka finished with three kills and Lindsey Proulx had a great game with an ace, three kills, and six digs.

The Lady Knights go into the second day of the CCRI Classic as the No.3 seed and will face the winner of the NHTI vs Bunker Hill CC match at 10am Sunday if they win they will face the winner of the No. 1 seed Genesee CC vs No. 2 seed FIT match in the finals of the CCRI Classic.
