Lady Knights lose battle with Bunker Hill 60-52

Warwick, R.I. – December 12, 2014: The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Bulldogs of Bunker Hill Community College from Charlestown, MA for a Region XXI non-league game Thursday evening at the Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse in Warwick. The Lady Knights lost a hard-fought battle with Bunker Hill CC 60-52. With the loss the Lady Knights are 3-6 overall and 3-3 in Region XXI play.

The Lady Knights and Bulldogs battled closely in the first half with Bunker Hill taking a 14-16 lead with about five minutes left in the half. Lady Knights Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian (Chandler, AZ) made two free throws to tie the game 16-16. The Lady Knights then got a spark from freshman Guard Yesenia Biascochea (Central Falls, RI) who had back-to back steals which sparked a CCRI rally in the closing moments of the half. Freshman Lyric Artis (Albany, NY) made those turnovers count as she scored seven straight points for the Lady Knights along with a lay-up from Biascochea and another fouls shot from Artis CCRI took a 26-16 lead into halftime.

Though CCRI had the lead they also were in a heap of foul trouble which would come back to haunt them later. CCRI held a good lead for the first half of the second half but with about 10 minutes left lost their first player to fouls with the score 36-30 CCRI. Bunker Hill kept chipping away at the CCRI lead and a couple minutes later CCRI lost another player to fouls. CCRI, now playing with just four players still held the lead until 5:52 left in the game when Yohana Chrisyanto tied the game 41-41. The Lady Knights kept battling and regained the lead on a basket by Lyric Artis and free throws from Jesse Ossian to take a 47-41 lead again. But BHCC battled back themselves to take a 50-49 lead on another basket from Chrisyanto. Bunker Hill kept the lead as CCRI lost another to fouls and the Bulldogs pulled away to win 60-52.

Leading the way for CCRI was Tri-Captain Jesse Ossian with 14 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists and Tiana Cruz (South Kingstown, RI) who charted her second career double-double with 10 points and team-high 13 rebounds also helping CCRI was Lyric Artis with 14 points, including two 3-pointers with eight rebounds and a steal, Yesenia Biascochea added five points and two steals while Tri-Captain LaShana Tolliver (Albany, NY) added four points, eight rebounds with two blocks, two steals and two assists.

The next games for the Lady Knights will be this weekend when they travel to Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY to compete in the Genesee CC Cougar Holiday Classic. On Saturday the Lady Knights will face undefeated (10-0) Niagara County Community College at 4:00pm and Sunday they will face the hosting cougars of Genesee CC at 11am.
