Warwick, R.I. – April 29, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team travelled to Brockton, MA to continue a doubleheader with Massasoit Community College that began on April 3rd. The Lady Knights swept the Warriors of Massasoit CC 23-0 and 20-0. With the two victories the Lady Knights improve to 8-4 overall and 8-0 in Region XXI play. The two victories give Head Coach Liz Afonso 109 career victories. 109 surpass the mark set by former CCRI Head Coach Bev Wiley’s program record of 108 career victories. In addition, the victories allow CCRI the opportunity to host the Region XXI softball Championship Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th at Winslow Park in Apponaug.
In the circle for the Lady Knights Co-Captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) was simply magnificent throwing five innings of one-hit ball while striking out seven Warrior batters en route to the victory. Butler also helped her own cause at the plate with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.
The Lady Knights offense was unrelenting amassing 23 runs: three in the second and 10 in the third and fourth. Leading the way was Erica Jewett (Coventry, RI) who had three hits including a triple with a career high seven RBIs and four runs scored and Jess Brosnahan (Warwick, RI) with two hits including a double with an RBI and two runs scored. Also with a multi-hit game was Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) and Kristina Rodriguez (North Kingstown, RI) with two hits an RBI and a run scored. Rounding out the attack was sophomore Ashely Spear (Harrisville, RI) with a homerun two RBIs and four runs scored.
Once again Taylor Butler came back to make quick work of the Warriors throwing a two hitter this time while striking out nine Warrior batters to garner the victory. At the plate she added two hits an RBI and three runs scored.
Six Lady Knights had multi-hit games led by sophomore Ashely Spear who hit for the cycle with a homerun, triple, double and single with five RBIs and three runs scored. If that wasn’t enough Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) added four hits with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. Jess Brosnahan added three hits with five RBIs and two runs scored and Mikayla Fernandez (Burrillville, RI) had three hits, two triples, two RBIs and two runs scored while Kristina Rodriguez had two hits and three RBIs.
The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
