Warwick, R.I. – April 29, 2015: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, MA for the Region XXI Championship on Tuesday. The Lady Knights beat the Warriors 7-3 and 6-1 to win the best of three series 2-0. The Lady Knights advance to the District K Championship in Georgetown, DE. The Schedule of games will be: Mercyhurst North East (25-10) vs Delaware Tech (22-2) at 10am, CCRI vs Mercyhurst at 12noon and then CCRI vs Del Tech at 2p in a double elimination round robin format two teams have two losses.
Co-Captain Taylor Butler (North Kingstown, RI) was in the circle again for CCRI and got her third victory in a row versus the Warriors. This tie it was a bit harder though she only allowed one earned run over seven strong innings while striking out eight batters. At the plate she added two hits, a runs scored and an RBI.
Offensively Co-Captain Maxine DeLuise (Warwick, RI) had a key two-RBI triple and a runs scored while Meghan Rousseau (Richmond, RI) had two hits and a run scored while Jenna Urso (West Warwick, RI) added a double one RBI and two runs scored. The Lady Knights were comfortably ahead 7-1 going into the sixth inning when Massasoit tacked on two runs but CCRI won fairly comfortably in the first game.
In the circle for the Lady Knights Jess Spargo (Westerly, RI) got the start and pitched very well throwing five and a third innings allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out three Warrior batters. She was relieved by the Warriors’ worst nightmare Taylor Butler who came in the game intentionally walked a batter before slamming the door shut on a potential Massasoit sixth inning rally. With a 2-1 lead and the bases loaded with one out Butler was able to induce a caught stealing at the plate and strikeout Alana Oksana to get out of the inning with CCRI still leading.
Offensively for CCRI Meghan Rousseau continued her hot day going 3-3 with an RBI and a runs scored and Co-Captain Maxine DeLuise also added three hits including two doubles with An RBI. The hero of the game had to be Mikayla Fernandez who came up in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and the score 2-1 CCRI, she crushed a bases clearing double down the left field line to give the Lady Knights a nice cushion. To which Butler retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the Region XXI Championship!
