SalinasAlyssa Salinas

the CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to concord, NH to compete in the New Hampshire Tech Invite on Saturday.  In pool play the Lady Knights faced University of Maine-Machias from Machias, ME; New Hampshire Tech from Concord, NH; Paul Smith’s College from Paul Smith, NY and Unity College from Unity, ME.  The Lady Knights went 4-0 in pool play. With the four wins the Lady Knights improve to 8-3 on the season.
Match one vs. UMaine-Machias:

CCRI-25 UM-Machias-11 and CCRI-25 UMM-12

The first set for the Lady Knights was very good. They came out with a force to show all the teams in this gym who they really were. “I was a very proud coach!” commented Head Coach Sam Amaral “Sometimes the girls have a tendency to play down to their opponent’s level and all week we worked on, no matter what, ‘better the ball and play up’.” They did a fabulous job of playing as a team and bettering the ball when things weren't perfect. Tri-Captain Janny Cabrera (Providence, RI) finished game one with three aces and six kills. Omayra Corchado (Isabela, PR) finished with three aces, and two kills and Alyssa Salinas (Corpus Christi, TX) added eight assists and an ace. In the second set, the Lady Knights knew what they had to do. “It was great to see the girls give 100% every point even when they see the win in sight.” added Coach Amaral.  Cabrera finished the game with two solo blocks and six digs. Corchado finished with two aces and three kills, and seven digs. Jincy Phann (Cranston, RI) had two aces and some key digs to get the Lady Knights closer to victory. Salinas had nine assists, four kills, two digs and a half block. Tri-Captain Chelsea O’Connor (Pawtucket, RI) finished with one ace, three kills and three very important digs.

Match two vs. NHTI:

CCRI-25 NHTI-14 and CCRI- 25 NHTI-13

The Lady Knights were in total control of this match having seen NHTI multiple times this season. The CCRI coaching staff told the girls “They took one set from us at our classic and they won't get another one this season.” The first set was Delyn Pizzaro’s (Homestead, FL) breakout performance that the staff had been looking for. Pizzaro finished the set with six kills and a half block while Cabrera had an Ace and three kills. Alyssa Salinas ran a fast offense with nearly perfect serve receive from O’Connor and Tri-Captain Haley Greenwood (Goldsboro, NC). Salinas finished the first set with an ace, 13 assists and a half block. The second set was more of the first. Janny added six kills, three aces, seven digs and two solo blocks. Phann had two assists and six digs with Greenwood scoring two aces late in the match and Pizzaro closing the door with a solo block of her own.

Match three vs. Paul Smiths College

CCRI- 25 PSC-15 and CCRI- 25  PSC-21

Paul Smith’s College was a much tougher match for the Lady Knights. They battled CCRI with a very scrappy defense and smart hitting. The first set CCRI pulled together with great defense and serving that consistently kept the PSC offense out of system. Once again Janny Cabrera took control of the first set with nine kills, an assist, an ace, and a solo block. Omayra Corchado held her own with three big kills. Jincy Phann and Haley Greenwood had some huge digs at key moments of the match with five and six respectively. Alyssa Salinas ran another smart game racking up 10 assists, eight digs and two kills. Set two was much more difficult. CCRI was sluggish having just played three straight games. Paul Smiths and CCRI were neck-and-neck right up to 15-15. Once PSC took a 15-16 lead, Coach Amaral took a crucial time out to remind the girls to “go back to fundamentals when they are tired.” They settled down and battled back on a huge kill from Cabrera to get the ball back at 18-17. Then Chelsea O’Connor took over at the service line with five straight serves including three aces in a row to give CCRI a 22-19 lead! With that lead CCRI never looked back and took the victory. Cabrera had five kills. O’Connor had three aces and four digs. Phann had two kills and an assist while Alyssa Salinas had nine assists and three digs.

Match 4 vs. Unity College

CCRI: 25 Unity- 15 and CCRI- 25 Unity- 15

Unity was no match for the power of the Lady Knights. CCRI was in total control with six aces, 14 kills, two blocks and 20 digs. The Lady Knights showed no mercy and push through this first set. Janny Cabrera finished the game with six kills, Omayra Corchado finished with four kills, Alyssa added 10 assist, three aces, and one solo block. While Chelsea O’Connor, Haley Greenwood, and Jincy Phann all fished with one ace each. ‘I was very proud of the girls in this match, they stayed aggressive, loud and forceful.” added Coach Amaral.  It came to no surprise that the Lady Knights continued on their streak of intensity with a goal to win quickly. Top performers in this match: Janny seven kills and one block, Greenwood had seven dig and two aces, Salinas two ace and 11 assist and Chelsea and Omayra had one ace each.

The Lady Knights will advance to the tournament Playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
