The CCRI women’s soccer team rolled past Dean College yesterday 9-1 capturing the Region 21 New England championship for the 13th year in a row. In addition CCRI celebrated Sophomore Day for their eight sophomores making their last regular season appearance at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln.  The eight sophomores honored were: Tri-Captain Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI), Tri-Captain Betti Worth (Manchester, England), Tri-Captain Paige Oram (Burrillville, RI), Erin Rodriguez (Tiverton, RI), Jenn Kittila (Warwick, RI), Missy Richards (Coventry, RI), Taylor Lopes (Cumberland, RI) and Jess Hammond (Warwick, RI).

The Lady Knights started the scoring onslaught early and never looked back.  In just the second minute of play CCRI took an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Tri-Captain Paige Oram scored an unassisted goal, three minutes later Oram scored again on a pass from freshman midfielder Carla Porras (Narragansett, RI).  However Dean got on the board shortly after as forward Arianna Medeiros scored as got around d a CCRI defender and placed a shot along the ground and into the corner of the CCRI goal.  This seemed to jump start the Lady Knights as just one minute later sophomore forward Missy Richards scored on a pass from sophomore captain and midfielder Betti Worth.  With 10 minutes remaining in the half sophomore Jenn Kittila scored on a beautiful header off of a corner kick from freshman Stepheny Perez (Providence, RI) giving CCRI a commanding 4-1 advantage.  Just three minutes later freshman Ashley LeClair (Westerly, RI) converted on a double assist play from Paige Oram and Jenn Kittila.  With five minutes left in the half the Lady Knights Jenn Kittila scored on a high lofting shot giving CCRI a 6-1 halftime lead.

The halftime break did not seem to break CCRI’s momentum as freshman Carla Porras netted the Lady Knights 7th goal on a pass from Stepheny Perez just four minutes into the half.  Three minutes later Betti Worth scored an unassisted goal, CCRI’s 8th on the day.  Worth and the Lady Knights weren’t done yet as Betti scored again on a pass from Porras with nine minutes remaining in the match.

With the victory CCRI closes out the regular season with a 10-6-1 overall record.  The Lady Knights now advance to the District playoffs that will be held at CCRI in Lincoln on November 9th and 10th.  The District Champion will advance to the NJCAA National Championship.

Paige Oram, Betti Worth and Jenn Kittila each tallied two goals apiece on the day.  Oram also had an assist and Worth and Kittila each had two assists.  Carla Porras had a goal and two assists and Stepheny Perez recorded two assists on the day.  Goalkeeper Alex Place played well and stopped a couple of quality Dean scoring chances.  Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented after the game. “Our team came out smoking today as they knew what was at stake.  They were all over Dean today!  The coaching staff is proud of the way our team played today. They executed some great passing and scoring ability.  However, our work is not done as the district playoffs will be much more difficult and intense but I think our team is up for it!”

The Lady Knights have a bit of a break as they prepare to host the District Championships between the Region champions of Region III, XV, XIX and XXI (CCRI’s Region).  The District Championship schedule will be released once the other Region Champions have been determined.
