Lady Knights squeak by Springfield College JV 3-2!
In the first half of play Springfield really took it to the Lady Knights who seemed to be totally out of sync. In the 12th minute of play Springfield took an early 1-0 lead as they were able to score off of a scramble in front of the CCRI goal. The half would end with Springfield in front 1-0. Head Coach Dennis Grassini commented “We came out very flat and lethargic. At halftime Coach Bannan and I had to wake them up!”
As the second half began CCRI looked like a totally different team. In the 16th minute freshman forward Kassandra Lussier (Warwick, RI) tied the score at 1-1 as she semi-bicycle kicked a shot with her back to the Springfield goal on a scramble in front of the net after a Lady Knights corner kick from sophomore Tri-Captain Cait McGarry (Warwick, RI). This play really ignited the Lady Knights. Just five minutes later, freshman midfielder Betti Worth (Manchester, England), scored on another beautiful corner kick from Cait Garry. A double assist was awarded on the play as sophomore midfielder Jessica Sandin (Warwick, RI) got the ball over to Worth to give the Lady Knights a 2-1 advantage. With just eight minutes left in the game Springfield was awarded a free kick as one of their players was fouled right outside the 18 yard box. Springfield scored to tie the game at 2-2. CCRI continued to put pressure on the Springfield defense as the game continued. The pressure paid off and with a little over five minutes remaining in the contest Jessica Sandin dribbled her way through the Springfield defense and placed a nice shot low and into the corner past the Springfield goalkeeper to give the Lady Knights the hard-fought 3-2 victory.
Once again, freshman goalkeeper Alex Place (East Greenwich) came up with some very nice and timely saves for the Lady Knights in the game. While the CCRI sophomores led the offense as Cait McGarry had two assist and Jessica Sandin added a goal and an assist on the day.
Coach Grassini commented after the game “Springfield is a much improved team this year as we found out tonight. They gave us all we could handle. I always tell our team that there are two half’s to a game and they have to play a full 90 minutes. We were lucky escaping with this victory as we only played one half.”
The next game for the Lady Knights will be next Wednesday when they will host their Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College at 4:00pm at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln.
