The CCRI Lady Knights’ softball team finished their play at the National Training Center in Clermont Florida on Tuesday the 12th by playing the Challengers of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C). The Lady Knights lost to the Challengers 11-2. With the loss the Lady Knights fall to 0-5 on the season.
CCRI- 2 Cuyahoga CC (Tri-C) - 11 in 5 innings by Mercy Rule
On the mound for the Lady Knights Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, RI) threw all five innings for the Lady Knights and took the loss. Tri-C scored first in the first inning on two hits the Lady Knights did not answer but did get a hit form Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI). Tri-C tacked on two more runs in the second inning on three singles to increase its lead to 3-0 and once again in the second the Lady Knights were held scoreless after a lead-off walk to begin the inning by Tri-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI). Tri-C added two more in the third inning on three hits increasing its lead to 5-0. CCRI did get another hit in the third but it was with two outs and they could not advance the runner. Tri-C added another in the fourth on two hits to move ahead 6-0 after a fielding error. However, in the bottom of the fourth the Lady Knights got on the scoreboard as Tri-Captain Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) led-off the inning with a single followed by Coburn who walks with both runners advancing on a passed ball to second and third base. Brittany Smith (North Providence, RI) flied-out a high pop fly to second base. Katie Paddock (Providence, RI) followed with a single to score MarcAurele and advance Coburn to third base. Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI) hits into a fielder’s choice when Coburn gets caught too far off third base and Paddock gets caught immediately after off second base. 1, 2, and 3 the inning is over.
In the fifth inning Tri-C opened the flood gates scoring five runs on a walk, two singles and a double making the margin enough to threaten with the mercy rule. In the bottom of the inning CCRI was trying to survive scored one when Amber Boucher (Warwick, RI) leads-off with a single and eventually scored on a Kate Fowler single. Alex Place was up next and grounds back to the pitcher for the first out of inning. Fowler gets a single next to score Boucher. Sara Deal (North Kingstown, RI) struck out for the second out and MarcAurele pops out to the third baseman to end the inning and therefore the game by mercy rule 11-2.
Head Coach Liz Afonso commented about the Florida road trip: “Although disappointed in the Lady Knights ending record in Florida, I see great potential in this team. Although we know we have some things to work on, the trip is a success in that we were able to get on a field and figure out where we stand at this point. This group is a great group of kids with good chemistry and work ethic. I expect us to get better and better as we begin our season here at home this Saturday.”
The Knights play their first home games this weekend Saturday they host University of Maine-Presque Isle for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm and Sunday versus the Northeastern University club team for a doubleheader beginning at 12noon.
