04.18.13: The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to Brockton, MA to play the Warriors of Massasoit Community college for e Regional doubleheader on Thursday. The Lady Knights split the doubleheader with the Warriors winning the first game 9-0 but falling in the second game 4-2. With the split the Lady Knights record is now 10-12 and Massasoit earns the right to host the Region XXI Championship series next weekend (April 27th and 28th)

On the mound for the Lady Knights in the first game was Katie Paddock (Providence, RI) who threw six shutout innings allowing three hits and striking out a career-high eight Warrior batters to earn her fourth victory of the year. Paddock did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, she had one strikeout in both the first and second inning, two strikeouts in the fourth, and three strikeouts in the fifth, and ended the game with also ended the game with another strikeout to cap her career-best strikeout performance. Katie also helped her own cause at the plate with a double, one RBI, a walk and two runs scored.
Leading the way offensively for CCRI was Tri-Captain Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) who went 4-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored and Sarah Deal (North Kingstown, RI) who had two hits, including a triple, a stolen base, two RBIs and two runs scored. Also having a big game at the plate was Macayla Paiva (West Greenwich, RI) with two hits and an RBI while Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI), Tri-Captain Liz Coburn (Chepachet, RI) and Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) each added a hit apiece.
First run came in the fourth inning when Amber Boucher (Warwick, RI) reached on an error with two outs and scored when another error was committed during Alex Place's (East Greenwich, RI) at bat. Three runs scored in the fifth beginning with MarcAurele who had a one out double, followed by an RBI triple by Deal, which was followed by an RBI double by Paddock. Later Iadeluca had a sacrifice bunt to move Paddock to third and Paiva added an RBI single. Five runs were scored in the sixth inning: Coburn led off with a single, Fowler reached on an error, MarcAurele had an RBI single, followed by an RBI single by Deal, Paddock walked and then Iadeluca had an RBI single.
CCRI 2 Massasoit 4
On the mound for the Lady Knights in the second game Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca started the game and was taken out in the third with one out and two runners on. One runner scored charging the run to her. Iadeluca was relieved in the third inning by Katie Paddock. After three the score was CCRI- 2 Massasoit- 1. Massasoit scored again in the fourth to tie the game and then got a 2-run home run in the sixth giving the tough luck loss to Paddock. Iadeluca threw two and a third innings allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out two Warrior batters. Paddock threw three and two thirds innings allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits walking three while striking out one batter. Paddock did help the CCRI offense with a hit and RBI.
At the plate for the Lady Knights Tri-Captain Izzy MarcAurele kept swinging a hot bat adding two more hits on the day, including a double while adding a stolen base. MarcAurele was helped by Sarah Deal who had two hits and a stolen base, Alex Place who had a hit and a run scored, and Kate Fowler who added a hit and a walk.
Place led off the game with a single, moved to second when Liz Coburn hit back to pitcher for first out. Fowler had a sacrifice bunt moving Place to third, and MarcAurele and Deal both had singles to score Place scored for the first run of the game. Second run was scored in the third inning: Coburn had a one out walk, followed by a walk by Fowler and Deal added a two out single to load bases then Paddock hit an RBI single. The Lady Knights tried to mount a late-game rally when Fowler had a single in the fifth and MarcAurele followed with a double but no runs were scored.
The Lady Knights are back in action Saturday when the host the Northeastern club Team for a doubleheader at Winslow Park in Warwick. This will also be Sophomore Day for their six sophomores: Tri-Captain Izzy MarcAurele, Tri-Captain Mel Iadeluca, Katie Paddock, Kate Fowler, Kyrie Craig (Warwick, RI), and Dara Patton (Cranston, RI). The Community College of Rhode Island, New England’s largest comprehensive community college, enrolls nearly 18,000 students in credit courses and thousands more in non-credit and job training classes. Its athletic program boasts 12 varsity programs and an academic support program for all student-athletes.
