Knights Fall to ASA 2-1

09.12.11

The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team welcomed ASA (formerly known as Advanced Software Analysis now known as simply ASA) from Manhattan, NY on Saturday at the CCRI soccer complex in Lincoln, RI.  The Knights lost to the Avengers of ASA 2-1.  With the loss the Knights begin the season 0-1.

The sunny skies were deceiving because the field was muddy and inconsistent after all the rain received earlier in the week.   Unfortunately, the conditions did not suit the style of play of the Knights.  ASA came off the bus ready to scrap and hustle in order to take a win back home to New York.  However, Head Coach Gabe Toro had confidence that his young team would be up to the task.  With only two returning players from last year: Co-Captains Luis Espinal (Pawtucket, RI) and Emmanuel Ridore (Warwick, RI). Coach Toro urged his young squad to attack and push the ball forward.  Freshman Sebastian Estriplet (Pawtucket, RI) took that advice to heart to perform exceptionally well.  One minute and thirty seconds into the game Estriplet received an assist from Freshman Servi Barrientos (Providence, RI) to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead.  Estriplet was able to push by a defender that was trying to grab him to gain some separation to unleash a 25-yard shot into the lower corner of the net.

Despite the great start, the muddy field conditions would come back to haunt the Knights, as they allowed two goals when the ball was played into the muddy quagmire in front of the Knights’ net and ASA players capitalized to score two very similar goals. Through it all, Freshman Goalkeeper Zack Caron (Seekonk, MA) still played very well in the game as he made several key saves to help increase the confidence in the back along with his defense. Unable to clear the ball out of the area, ASA was able to push in the ball with power and strength, goals that were exact opposite of the finesse goal scored by the Knights giving ASA the 2-1 victory.

The Knights’ next game will be Monday the 12th when they host Region XXI rivals Dean College from Franklin, MA at 4:00pm on the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln.
