Knights down Dean 2-1 in Sudden Death OT!
The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team traveled to Franklin, MA to their Division I Region XXI rival Bulldogs of Dean College. After losing to Dean College in their first encounter this season the Knights were motivated to win to keep their post season hopes alive. The Knights did just that by defeating the Bulldogs 2-1 in sudden death overtime. With the victory the Knights improve to 6-7 overall and 5-3 in Region XXI play. The Knights post season hopes hinge on the outcome of the Dean College Massasoit Community College game scheduled for Tuesday October 25th. If Massasoit wins the Knights are in if Dean wins the decision could come down to the goal differential between the teams.
Head Coach Gabe Toro was counting on his defenders to be solid in order to provide the foundation for the attack: Michael Keegan (East Greenwich, RI) and Chris Munoz (Talcahuano, Chile) held down the back with good leadership and experience which made a big difference in the game. Out on the flanks they were supported by Damon Georgiou(Portsmouth, RI) and Chris Lopes (Pawtucket, RI). Munoz needed to be substituted during the game because of an injury. That pushed Lopes into the middle of the defense in front of Keegan with Brian Rego (Rehoboth, MA) shifting to the outside of the defense. Coach Toro urged the Knights to play physically and contest every 50/50 ball. Tri-Captains Emmanuel Ridore (Warwick, RI) and Luis Espinal (Pawtucket, RI) led the charge by hustling and creating pressure in the midfield. With about nine minutes left in the game Michael Gomes (Cumberland, RI) dribbled into the Bulldogs’ penalty area and he was tackled down. The referee whistled for a penalty kick. Tri-Captain Manny Alves(Pawtucket, RI) stepped-up and put the ball into the back of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Dean answered quickly just five minutes later after a mad scramble the ball found a Dean player 15 yards in front of the Knights goal and he was able to beat goalkeeper Zach Caron (Seekonk, MA) to tie the game 1-1 and send the game into sudden death overtime.
About six minutes into overtime Michael Gomes created some space on the right side of the Dean’s defense. He passed the ball back to Servi Barrientos (Providence, RI) who crossed the ball into the far post where Jerson Gomes(Pawtucket, RI) was waiting to head the ball into the back of the net giving the Knights the dramatic 2-1 sudden death victory.
Coach Toro commented after the game “I was very happy with the heart and effort our young men put forth, they played hard and deserved this victory.”
The Knights travel to Springfield, MA to play American International College Wednesday October 26th at 2:00pm for their final regular season game.
