Knights Beat Bristol Bees 6-2!
The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team headed over to North Smithfield High School on Wednesday to utilize the Astro Turf field because the heavy rains had made the CCRI Flanagan Campus soccer field unplayable. The Knights were played the Bees of Bristol Community College from Fall River, MA for a Region XXI match-up. The Knights defeated the Bees 6-2. With the victory the Knights improve to 5-7 on the season and 4-3 in Region XXI play.
Knights’ Head Coach Gabe Toro and his staff were looking forward to extending the Knights’ two-game winning streak to three and the Knights answered the call. At the six minute mark Jerson Gomes (Pawtucket, RI) served in a corner kick that found Servi Barrientos (Providence, RI) who was able to head the ball into the back of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Coach Toro commented “Servi (Barrientos) came out on fire today and the heavy rains did not make a difference in his game plan.” About eight minutes later Barrientos intercepted a pass and hit a laser from about 25 yards out, the shot had so much velocity the goalie could not react in time. “The best goal of the year thus far” agreed the Knights’ coaching staff. Barrientos later assisted Michael Gomes (Cumberland, RI) at about 21 minutes into the first half with a through ball that broke Gomes into the open area with the Bristol goalkeeper off his line and Gomes was able to chip over the goalie from about 20 yards out. The fourth goal came from a great team effort as Sebastian Estriplet(Pawtucket, RI) dribbled down the right side to find his high school teammate in the Jerson Gomes in the back post that was able to finish with excellent composure. The Knights gave up one goal before the half to Bristol Community College making the score 4-1.
As the second half began Servi Barrientos was not finished with his big day. He stole yet another ball in the midfield area and was able to unleash another rocket passed the Bristol keeper making the score 5-1. Barrientos scored again with about 15 minutes in the game as he received a pass from Tri-Captain Manny Alves (Pawtucket, RI). Barrientos dribbled by a defender to rip another long-distance shot passed the Bristol keeper making the final score 6-2 CCRI.
Coach Toro commented after the game “Overall we played well and were able to create opportunities for each other. Servi was able to get into a good rhythm and had an excellent game with four goals and one assist.”
The Knights need to continue to bring this energy and rhythm to play this Saturday when they travel to Franklin, MA to play Dean College at 1pm. If the Knights win they could earn a berth in the 2011 Region XXI Tournament.
