Lady Knights fall twice in Districts to end season 25-9
The CCRI Lady Knights softball team hosted the District I Tournament this weekend at Winslow Park in Apponaug. The Lady Knights hosted the Colts of Orange County community College from Middletown, NY and the Saints of Mercyhurst north East from North East, PA. CCRI lost two very close games first to Orange County 7-6 and then to Mercyhurst 4-3 in eight innings on Saturday. Also on Saturday Mercyhurst beat Orange 3-1. On Sunday Orange exacted revenge in the first game of the day 3-0 on a 3-run homer from Danielle Gomez in the top of the seventh. In the deciding game Orange jumped ahead 5-0 in the first inning only to have Mercyhurst battle back to score 11 unanswered runs to win the District I Championship and Advance to the Division II women’s softball Nationals in Clinton, MS May 17-19th.
Game 1: Mercyhurst-3 Orange County-1
Game 2: Orange County-7 CCRI- 6
With all games being flipped for home team the Lady Knights were visitor for this game versus the Colts. The Lady Knights took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning but the Colts answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. CCRI went down 1-2-3 on the seventh to take the hard-fought loss.
On the mound for the Lady Knights Michelle Sylvestre (Warwick, RI) took the loss throwing six innings allowing seven runs, six earned on 13 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Sylvestre pitched well enough to get the victory in this see-saw battle but Orange rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth and the Lady Knights could not answer handing Sylvestre the hard-luck loss. With the loss Sylvestre ends the season with an impressive 9-2 pitching record.
At the plate for the CCRI Tri-Captain Devin Azulay (Attleboro, MA) led the way with three hits, a double and two singles with a run scored and an RBI followed by Sarah Siconio (Warwick, RI) with two hits. Tri-Captain Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) added a hit and two runs scored while Leslie Peralta (Providence, RI), Izzy MarcAurele (Cranston, RI) and Michelle Sylvestre each added a hit. Unfortunately for the Lady Knights their output wasn’t enough to secure the victory.
Game 3: Mercyhurst- 4 CCRI- 3 in eight innings.
Once again the Lady Knights were visitor for this game. The Lady Knights had a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning before Mercyhurst tied the game. Both teams went scoreless in the seventh. Setting up the international tie-breaker (last batted out starts at second base). The Lady Knights failed to get a run across the plate and the Tyler Honard from Mercyhurst made them pay with a single down the right field line that scored the winning run handing CCRI the tough-luck loss.
On the mound for the Lady Knights Tri-captain Devin Azulay ended her record-setting career for CCRI with an excellent performance but took the bitter loss in the bottom of the eighth inning. Azulay pitched seven plus strong innings allowing four earned runs on six hits, walking three and striking out six Saints’ batters. The six strikeouts bring her Career Strikeout Record to 206 career strikeouts.
At the plate for CCRI Izzy MarcAurele led the way with two hits and two runs scored, followed by Sarah Siconio who also added two hits. Also helping the Lady Knights was Michelle Sylvestre with a hit an RBI and a run scored, Kate Carroll (Coventry, RI) added a hit and an RBI while Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI), Kayla Matarese (Cranston, RI), and Kate Fowler (Warwick, RI) each added a hit apiece. Once again their output did not come when they needed it as they let scoring opportunities slip through their fingers.
