Lady Knight lose opener in Florida
The CCRI Lady Knights softball team opened their season at the National Training Center in Clermont, FL on Monday. The Lady Knights faced the Golden Eagles of Rock Valley Community College from Rockford, IL. The Lady Knights fell to the Golden Eagles 7-3. With the loss the Lady Knights begin the season 0-1.
Lady Knights came out strong in the first inning drawing first blood by scoring a run early on. Nissa Perez (Warwick, RI) walked to lead of the game from there the speedster second and third base to later be hit home by Ashley Olson (Coventry, RI) in the first. Unfortunately, CCRI’s offense did not come alive much more than that gaining only six hits on the game. Defensively, Freshman Co-Captain Mel Iadeluca (Warwick, RI) made an excellent diving catch in right field to save some runs in the third inning.
At the plate the Lady Knights got two hits and an RBI from Co-Captain Ashley Olson and two hits a walk and one RBI from freshman shortstop Katelyn Carroll (Coventry, RI) and a hit and run scored from Kyrie Craig (Warwick, RI).
Head Coach Liz Afonso commented after the tough loss: “It was a disappointing loss for the Lady Knights opener as there were many errors and nerves that were evident in this season opener. We will use this Florida trip to tweak the lineup so that we can come back as strong as possible for the Region games.”
