Lady Knights dominate boards to beat Bulldogs 56-39!
The CCRI women’s basketball team traveled to Dean College in Franklin, MA for a Region XXI rivalry game. The Lady Knights came away with a 56-39 victory over the Bulldogs of Dean College. With the victory the Lady Knights improve to 15-10 on the season and 5-1 in Region XXI play.
The Lady Knights were playing in the later game versus the Bulldogs of Dean College as they were celebrating their “Pink Out” to promote breast cancer awareness. Both teams wore pink socks and warm-ups accessories to support the event.
With thirteen minutes left in the first half, the Knights trailed by eight. CCRI battled back to tie the game at 22-22 with ten seconds left in the first half. A steal by Lady Knights’ Co-Captain Jahira Smith(Norwich, CT) put CCRI up by two. The Lady Knights went into the locker room with a 24-22 advantage at halftime. Head Coach Kate Lynch commented: “We got off to a slow start in the opening minutes. We knew it was going to be tough to win at Dean. It always is.”
The second half was much like the first. There were several lead changes and ties. CCRI gained momentum in the final six minutes going on a run to close out the game. Coach Lynch added: “We knew it would come down to the first five minutes of each half and the last five minutes. Our players showed a lot of heart and resilience. They weathered Dean’s runs and battled back. I am very proud of them. It is a great road win for us.”
Jess Randall (Warwick, RI) led all scorers with 17 points going 11-14 from the free throw line. Co-Captain Jahira Smith tallied 12 points with five assists, two steals, eight rebounds and a blocked shot. The Lady Knights’ frontcourt was led by Jenna Ayala (Paterson, NJ) recorded a double-double scoring 10 points and ripping down a game-high 13 rebounds with a blocked shot and Krista Trenholm (Hope Valley, RI) chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds while combo guard Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, CT) grabbed seven rebounds with three steals, two assist and two points. The Lady Knights out-rebounded the Bulldogs 46-26 which was a big key to their big regional victory.
The Lady Knights return to action on Saturday at 2:00pm when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Division I powerhouse ASA College (20-3).
