Class of 1989

Fortunato "Fred" Carello

In the 1960s, Carello came into CCRI to be a math professor and thought his coaching career was over after being a successful coach at Warwick Vets and Pilgrim High School, but little did he know, it was just starting.

He became CCRI’s first hockey and golf coach.  Later on, he served as an assistant coach for hockey and was the golf coach until the early 1980’s.  In his time coaching, he coached many All-New England players and has numerous amounts of championships.  With that, he also was part of the math department and department chairman for 18 years.

Gregg Cornell

Cornell is considered to be one of CCRI’s best runners to this day.  He was a two-time All-New England selection; he was the first runner to do so for the college and in his last season, he won the New England Championship; he was also part of the first two New England title teams.

As a runner, he qualified for two National Championship meets and was a representative for CCRI at an international meet in Puerto Rico. He won the Student Athlete of the Year Award in his last year and went on to be a Division III All-American at Bridgewater State and was named Bridgewater State's Athlete of the Year in the 1986-87, after Bridgewater, he became one of the state's best long-distance runners by winning the Cape Cod Marathon in 1995 and the Ocean State Marathon in 1991.

Since then, Cornell has been CCRI’s head coach for Cross Country, Outdoor Track and Field since 1989 and the head coach for the Indoor Track and Field team since it started in 2002. He is the longest tenured coach for the college. Cornell has coached 11 NJCAA Division III All-Americans and more than 25 All-District runners; the men's team has placed in the top three at the North East District Meet five times and in the top 10 at the NJCAA Division III national championship three times.

The college presented Cornell with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2010.
