Course Description:

The content of Business and the Law, as with most introductory law courses, emphasizes contracts and the legal system.  By including modules on the law of sales, commercial  paper, agency, and property—and examining such critical legal environment topics as government regulation, employment practices, and consumer and environment  protection—students will gain a comprehensive overview of law and the world of  business.

ORIENTATION, SEMINARS, AND EXAMS
An orientation and two (2) seminars are scheduled as part of the telecourse.  The Orientation is designed to inform students how the telecourse functions and is administered.  The Seminars are intended to reinforce student learning and offer students an opportunity to interact with other students and the instructor in a classroom setting.  Since the classroom environment offers a stimulus to the total learning objective, if at all possible, it is recommended that students attend.  Orientation, Seminars, Mid-Term Exam and Final Exam will be at 4:00 PM at Knight Campus on the following dates:

GRADING
There are two (2) exams.  The first exam (Mid-Term) and the Final Exam will be closed book and held on campus.  Both exams will be multiple-choice questions.  A number of the multiple-choice questions for both the Mid-Term Exam and the on-campus Final Exam will come from the telecourse study guide.  There may be Essay questions on both exams.

Additionally, you are required to complete a written assignment involving the use of (2) newspaper or magazine articles.  You must select two articles from newspapers or magazines related to law and the world of business.  Each article must be numbered and pasted or taped on a sheet of paper with the source and date cited.  You must write a summary of each article.  The summary must include a review of the article as well as comments on the impact of the subject matter as described in the article on the law and the world of business.  You may also find it necessary to criticize or praise the article.  This assignment should be typewritten, at least one (1)  page in length and must be submitted when taking the Final Exam.  If desired, please make a copy of the paper for your personal file, as it will not be returned.

 

In order to receive a grade for the course, you must take both exams and complete the written assignment.  {Mid-Term Exam (40%); Final Exam (40%); Written Assignment (20%)].  The instructor reserves the right to modify the course requirements, assignments, grading procedures, and other related policies as circumstances may dictate. If you have any problems or special requests, please send a letter of explanation with your exam or call and leave a message.  If you do not complete both Exams and the Written Assignment or drop the course, you will receive a “W” (withdrawal) for the course grade.

EXAMINATIONS
EXAM I
The Midterm will be a multiple-choice exam.  It will be held at the Knight Campus.
The Midterm will include Textbook Chapters 1, 6 and 10 through 15.
The test grade will be sent by E-Mail or regular mail to you as soon as possible after the Mid-Term Exam  is  corrected.
EXAM II
The Final Exam will be multiple-choice.  It will be given at Knight Campus, Warwick.
The Final Exam will include Textbook Chapters 16 through 25, 28, and 29.
EXAM DIRECTIONS
Answer sheets will be machine graded and must be completed with a Number TWO (2) pencil.  The pencil mark for each answer must fill the space provided so that the grading machine will read the mark.  Light pencil marks will cause inaccurate grading.  Please send any correspondence to:

COURSE OVERVIEW
The objectives of the course will be accomplished through the use of television programs, student telecourse study guide, textbook reading assignments, scheduled student review sessions, and instructor interaction.

STUDY SEQUENCE
The learned system you will use as you work your way through Business and the Law (Law of Contracts) has three components:  a Telecourse Study Guide, a Text, and television programs.  Together they provide an integrated learning system.  In order to master each of the 30 lessons of the course, you should use the sequence of learning activities as follows:

  1. Read the textbook reading assignment in Business Law and the Legal Environment as listed in the course syllabus.
  2. View the television program.
  3. View the online video segments for the Business Law course (*optional).
HOW SHOULD STUDENTS VIEW THE PROGRAMS FOR MAXIMUM LEARNING?
Television programs for learning are not exactly like watching a football game for entertainment.  However, anyone knows that the viewer who watches a football game and knows all the players and their records has a different and richer experience than a one-time viewer.  So in reading the study guide and text prior to viewing a television program and actively watching and taking notes during the program, a student will have a different and more meaningful experience than a one-time viewer passively watching a program without doing the readings.
