Course description

The aim of this course is to provide students with a contemporary look at the scientific study of human development.  The course examines the effects of nature and nurture on development, beginning with the prenatal period and progressing through the lifespan (birth, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood).  Developmental changes are considered in three domains:  biological, cognitive and psychosocial.

MANDATORY ORIENTATION MEETING

***An alternative meeting time is Thursday, February 11 at 6:00 pm.  We will meet at my office (1614).***

***Any student who does not show up for the mandatory orientation meeting or does not meet with me on the alternative date will receive a grade of NS ("no show") for the course.***

EXAMS

In addition to the orientation meeting, three exams are scheduled.  Attendance at the exams is MANDATORY.

Exam 1:  Wednesday, March 3, 2:00 pm, Lincoln Campus, 1426

Exam 2:  Wednesday,  April 7, 2:00 pm, Lincoln Campus, 1426

Exam 3:  Wednesday, May 12, 2:00 pm, Lincoln Campus, TBA

***Exams may be taken at an alternative time -- Thursday night (one day after the exam is scheduled) at 6:00 pm.  We will meet at my office (1614). ***

TELECOURSE VIDEOS

Telecourse videos are broadcast twice a week beginning January 27 at the following dates and times:

Interconnect C: 

1) first broadcast on Wednesdays -- 6:00 am to 6:55 am

2) repeat broadcast on Sunday -- 6:00 am to 6:55 am

Videos of all telecourse programs will be available at the Learning Resource Center (Lincoln Campus) for any student who wishes to review or makeup a missed telecast.

Course grading

Based on a cumulative total of 210 points: 

EXAMS (170 points):

There are three on-campus exams.  The exams contain multiple choice questions.The dates of these exams are indicated on the syllabus. 

Exam 1 (50 points)

Chapters 1 - 6

Exam 2 (50 points)

Chapters 7 - 12

Exam 3 (70 points)

Chapters 13 – 17, 19, 23 - 26

Students are responsible for materials covered in the videos and the assigned chapters.  Students should pay particular attention to materials covered in the chapters.  If an exam is not taken during the scheduled exam time or the alternative time, the student will receive a score of 0 for that exam.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT (40 points)

There will be one written assignment handed out on April 7 (after Exam 2).  This assignment will contain four “reflection” questions addressing topics covered in the videos and text.  Students are required to answer two of the four questions.  The response to each question must be typed and no longer than three double-spaced pages.  Each question is worth a maximum of 20 points.  This assignment must be turned in by Wednesday, April 21.  Late assignments will not be accepted.
