Exams

The course is divided into 4 units as seen in the CONTENTS page of the Telecourse Guide.  There will be four multiple choice exams (100 questions) each covering one unit.

Please bring a pencil with you to the exam. All 4 exams MUST be taken to pass the course.  I will set up the exam room at 4:45 if you wish to start earlier.  Just come to the room and take a question paper and a machine scored answer sheet.  If you borrow a pencil, please return it. Write your name on both the answer sheet and the questions. You must hand in both when you are finished.

Make-up policy

If you miss an exam or cannot take the exam at the assigned time, you must contact me either before the exam or no later than 24 hours after the exam date.  You have two choices to make-up the exam.  I am in my office every Wednesday at 2 PM.  And you may take it at that time. Please let me know if you are going to take it then, so I will be certain to be in my office at that time. Another alternative is that you can take the exam with the Social Sciences Department Administrator.  You must call her in advance to take the exam with her at her convenience during her work day (8:30 AM to 2:30 PM). Her name is Ms. Villanueva and her phone number is 825-2171.  After you have arranged a time with her you must e-mail me to let me know so I can give her an exam for you.  ALL EXAMS MUST BE DONE NO LATER THAN MONDAY FOLLOWING THE WEDNESDAY EXAM DATE. In the case of the March 28th exam (Monday), all exams must be done by Friday, April 1.  You can e-mail me for your grades starting on Monday after the exam date.

Research Paper

Each student MUST submit a 4 to 5 page research paper in addition to taking the 4 exams.  The paper must be doubled spaced with the pages stapled together and numbered.  You must select the topic from the Essay Questions (not the short answer questions), which appear in the Practice test in the Telecourse Guide for each lesson.  This is a sample of the questions you may select and the page in the Telecourse Guide.

Essay questions

q. 13 on page 8, q. 14 p. 16; q. 14 p. 24 etc.  The only essay questions I have eliminated are questions 12 on page 191 and questions 10, 11, and 12 on page 213. Do not select these questions for your paper.

You must select your topic from one of the Essay questions.  Write the exact question that you are answering, the page it is found in the Telecourse Guide and your name on the title page.  Remember to Include the page in the Telecourse guide where the question is stated. You must number the pages of the paper and staple pages together.  Do not use plastic folders.

A formal college paper requires both citations (any form –footnotes, endnotes etc) to cite direct quotations or ideas along with a bibliography at the end listing the sources used in your research.  At least 3 SCHOLARLY sources should be used.  Textbooks (including the one used in the course), encyclopedia articles and Internet articles that are not written by a professional historian should not be used.  At the end of each chapter in your textbook are suggestions for scholarly sources.  Do not use Internet sources only. Go to the library and read articles or books on your topic.

Please make a copy of your paper in case it gets lost in the mail.  Papers can be submitted at any time during the semester but no later than April 27.  It must be submitted as a hard copy.  You may leave the paper in my mailbox located in the Social Sciences faculty area on the 3rd. floor, bring it with you to the third exam or mail it to me at:

Community College of RI
