Program Mission

The Physical Therapist Assistant Program at the Community College of Rhode Island prepares students for licensure and employment as Physical Therapist Assistants, in various health care settings, with diverse patient populations. Commitment to excellence in student preparation yields graduates that posses ethical practice standards, demonstrate outstanding technical competence, and incorporate critical thinking into all aspects of patient care. The program promotes a commitment to the profession of Physical Therapy, the importance of life long learning, and the value of community service.

Program Competencies
  1. The graduate will demonstrate appropriate conduct and ethical behavior as described in the Guide and Standards for Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant and applicable jurisdictional regulation of physical therapy services.
  2. The graduate will demonstrate a sound understanding of the structure and function of the normal human body, and will apply this knowledge to drive critical decisions while delivering patient care within an established plan of care.
  3. The graduate will practice according to the role of the Physical Therapist Assistant in the provision of physical therapy services and will foster an effective working relationship between the Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant.
  4. The graduate will be sensitive to individual and cultural differences in all aspects of Physical Therapy services.
  5. The graduate will demonstrate competence in the application of interventions within their scope of practice and training, as outlined in a comprehensive treatment plan.
  6. The graduate will demonstrate competence in data collection skills.
  7. The graduate will demonstrate the ability to modify physical therapy interventions within an established plan of care, or seek additional input from qualified personnel according to the level of care necessary, patient response or change in status.
  8. The graduate will demonstrate critical thinking skills as demonstrated through sound clinical judgments and practices.
  9. The graduate will demonstrate comprehensive, accurate, organized and timely written and verbal communication skills in the provision of patient care and related activities.
  10. The graduate will utilize effective time management skills and good organizational skills in their role as a Physical Therapist Assistant.
  11. The graduate will demonstrate proficiency in basic computer skills including word processing, file management, email, internet searching, and navigation of the College Pipeline informational system.
  12. The graduate will promote and practice utilizing evidence based physical therapy practice.
  13. The graduate will participate in lifelong learning activities.
  14. The graduate will maintain awareness of current trends in physical therapy and participate in the promotion of physical therapy through involvement in the American Physical Therapy Association.
  15. The graduate will participate in community and volunteer activities.
  16. It is expected that 85% of graduates will pass the professional licensure examination within 6 months of graduation.
  17. It is expected that 80% of graduates will be employed as PTA’s within 6 months of graduation and 10% will plan to continue their education.
