A. BACKGROUND:

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program consists of 120 hours of training - 88 hours of classroom and laboratory and 32 hours of clinical training in a nursing facility. Topics covered include basic nursing skills, resident’s rights, mental health and social services, basic rehabilitative services, personal care skills, and safety and emergency procedures.

B. POLICY STATEMENT:

Students must successfully complete a reading comprehension pre-test prior to applying to the CNA program. Students applying to the CNA program must submit a BCI from the State of Rhode Island, a completed CNA Application Form, a completed physical examination and a completed Immunization Form for CNA Students. CPR certification must be attained prior to the clinical portion of the program, which takes place during the last two weeks of training. Certification must be Healthcare Provider level by American Heart Association.

C. PROCEDURES:

  1. The first step is to register for the CNA Pre-Test.
  2. Students should obtain a BCI from the RI Attorney General’s Office.
  3. After the pre-test, you will be given an application and a physical examination form that must be completed by your physician.
  4. Students will be sent information on how to register for a class of their choice provided the completed application, physical, and Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) forms have been received.

D. POLICY APPLIES TO:

Students registering for the CNA Program.

E. responsible department:

The Center for Workforce and Community Education at the Community College of Rhode Island is the institution’s office responsible for coordinating the CNA Program.
