Characteristics of an Effective Tutor

Intelligence alone does not indicate success as a tutor, but the kind of person and student you are does:

  1. A positive outlook: The belief that things can be changed through action.
  2. An even disposition: Patience, gentleness, understanding, and fairness.
  3. Initiative: The ability to see what needs to be done and to do something about it.
  4. Enthusiasm: A liking for your subject, and a wish to share it with others.
  5. Reliability as a worker: Punctual, dependable, steady.
  6. Good communication skills: Being able to speak with students, staff, faculty and administration.
