Preparing for College

The Community College of Rhode Island’s Office of Opportunity and Outreach and the Rhode Island Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner invites you to participate in our statewide "Preparing for College" presentations for the 2016-17 academic year! Our interactive approach targets middle and high school students with the goal of informing them about the benefits of planning for their future – either college or career.

Topics include:

  • What is college today? Types of postsecondary education
  • Career or college or both? Which is right for you?
  • Career opportunities and the education you need to get there
  • Reasons to pursue education after high school
  • College planning—start where you are
  • Grade by grade milestones in college planning
  • “Show me the money:” How education pays off for you
  • College admissions and financial aid myths
  • Financial aid—types and ways to get it
  • College matching: finding the right fit for your needs

We see this program as extremely beneficial to all students, not just those who plan to move on to a traditional postsecondary education. Many students that have a more immediate career focus may also benefit from exposure to how to prepare for entering the workforce and the training necessary to meet employer expectations.

Program sessions are typically 60 minutes long and include discussion time and Q&A. We tailor each presentation to the needs of your student body and provide grade-appropriate information. We will also provide the students with information and an e-mail address to contact us in case they have questions after the presentation.

We are scheduling presentations for the upcoming academic year. Presentation scheduling is flexible, and presentations are available during school hours and in the afternoon or evening.

If you are interested in a presentation or would like more information about the program, please contact Naglaa Gaafar at CCRI’s Opportunity and Outreach (401-825-2407) or at nagaafar@ccri.edu to schedule an appointment.
