Transferring From CCRI to Other Institutions

While some four-year institutions prefer that the student complete Associate Degree requirements before transferring, the entrance requirements at four-year colleges vary widely. Catalogs of four-year colleges usually indicate this information, including the minimum cumulative averages required for transfer. The requirements range from a minimum of 2.00 ("C" average) in many institutions, to near 4.00 in more selective institutions.

Students wishing to transfer from the Community College of Rhode Island to other institutions should have their programs continually appraised by faculty advisors, the Advising and Counseling staff, and the institution they wish to attend. Students desiring to transfer with advanced standing to other institutions must meet academic criteria and course requirements set by the receiving institution. Transfer credits for advanced standing are accepted at the option of the senior college. A Transfer Guide for Students, based upon the RI Board of Governors' Policy for Articulation and Transfer, is available to provide students with information about requirements to transfer to Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island. Normally, transfer procedures are begun near the end of the term prior to the final semester. However, it is recommended that transfer planning begin during the student's first semester in college. Requests for transcripts of grades to be sent to senior colleges are made to the Office of Enrollment Services. Academic recommendations for transfer are arranged through the Advising and Counseling Center.

Students planning to transfer to Rhode Island College or the University of Rhode Island are urged to consult the Transfer Guide for Students before selecting courses at CCRI. Click here to see the latest transfer guide for the three state institutions of higher education.

Students are also encouraged to discuss their plans with the Admissions Offices at Rhode Island College (401-456-8234) or at URI (401-792-7100).

CCRI students planning to transfer to bachelor's degree programs in Business after finishing their associate degrees need to follow an appropriate course sequence here. This will insure that the maximum number of transfer credits are accepted toward the bachelor's degree. There is a core of Business courses that all colleges recommend be taken at CCRI, but individual institutions have their own specific requirements.

CCRI has formal articulation agreements with a number of bachelor's degree colleges throughout New England. It is your responsibility to inquire about these agreements and to plan your CCRI program of study accordingly. It is best for you to do this early in your career here.
