Admission Requirements

The Community College of Rhode Island has a policy of open admissions which gives all Rhode Island residents an opportunity for education beyond the high school level. Students who plan to attend CCRI with the intention of transferring to a four-year college or university can best prepare themselves in high school by taking college preparatory courses and obtaining a solid foundation in the humanities, language, arts, mathematics and sciences.

If a prospective applicant has reached the age of sixteen years, the compulsory school attendance age in Rhode Island, and has earned a high school diploma or its equivalent, the applicant may be admitted to a certificate or degree program at the Community College of Rhode Island. The equivalent of a high school diploma is defined as follows: demonstrated ability in passing all tests required to earn a certificate of high school equivalency (GED) by the Rhode Island Department of Education.

Although a high school diploma or its equivalent is not a general admission requirement of the College provided the student is 18 years of age, it should be noted that intercollegiate athletic participants, applicants for financial aid or veterans' benefits and in some cases students applying for transfer to some senior colleges must show evidence of a high school diploma or its equivalent.

A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for admission to the following programs: Nursing, Clinical Laboratory Technology, Radiography (X-Ray), Respiratory Therapy, Dental Hygiene, Dental Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant and Phlebotomy. In addition, individual departments may have specific admission requirements that students must meet. Since many of the above-mentioned programs have specific space limitations for admission, it is to the student's benefit to complete special admission requirements as soon as possible.

Candidates applying with a State Equivalency Diploma should arrange to have a transcript of the equivalency scores sent to the College from the General Equivalency Center. Equivalencies from correspondence schools are not acceptable.

There are formal application procedures that must be followed. Interested persons should contact the Office of Admissions and Records at (401) 825-2003 in Warwick, Lincoln, Providence, or Newport. You may alternatively complete the application in the back of the college catalog.

Full responsibility for the forwarding of application materials and transcripts together with a $20 application fee rests with the applicant.

The College Board Scholastic Assessment Tests (SAT I, II) are not required for admission to the College.

Admissions Policy for Health & Rehabilitative Sciences Programs

Although most of the programs at the Community College of Rhode Island can be completed in two years, students interested in Health & Rehabilitative Sciences programs, including Nursing, Allied Health and Dental Health, may need to allow a longer period of time for completion of the program requirements. Because these programs include a clinical experience component, a critical element in the student's training, the number of students admitted into these programs is limited by the number of clinical sites available to the College. Students who meet admission requirements are accepted into the program on a "first come, first served" basis. Since many of the above-mentioned programs have specific space limitations for admission, it is to the student's benefit to complete special admission requirements as soon as possible. In programs with limited enrollment capacities, qualified applicants are placed on waiting lists and are able to begin to complete the basic requirements for the program of their choice before being admitted to that program by enrolling in the College's General Studies Program. General Studies students can, with the assistance of counselors, select courses that fulfill the basic requirements of their program while waiting for formal admission to the program through the change of major process.

Because the clinical component of the Health & Rehabilitative Sciences programs is rigorous and time-consuming, many students have found it beneficial to begin completing basic course requirements before being formally admitted into the program. Students who work while attending CCRI, in particular, have often found that carrying a reduced course load over a longer period of time has enhanced their educational experience. Students who plan to transfer into a baccalaureate degree nursing program upon completion of their studies at CCRI may use the time spent enrolled in the General Studies Program to take courses that are not necessarily required as part of the CCRI Nursing Program, but may be needed for a more advanced degree. All students enrolled in Nursing, Allied and Dental Health programs must meet the health requirements established by the College in conjunction with the clinical agencies where they receive clinical experience.
