DeSanctis named Associate Vice President for Newport County Campus

Dr. Vincent DeSanctis, currently Dean of Lifelong Learning at the Community College of Rhode Island, has been appointed interim Associate Vice President for the CCRI Newport County Campus, a position he is assuming immediately.

Prior to coming to CCRI, DeSanctis served as president of the Warren County Community College in New Jersey for more than 15 years. He has also worked as the executive officer of the Shenango Valley campus in Pennsylvania State University's multi-campus system. During his professional career, DeSanctis has held significant administrative posts at Southern Illinois University and at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

DeSanctis holds a doctorate in administration and supervision from Rutgers University, a master's degree in social studies from Montclair State University and a bachelor of arts degree in social studies from William Patterson University. His academic scholarship includes numerous published articles on the subject of the adult learner.

As Associate Vice President, DeSanctis will be responsible for directing academic programs as well as college services at the Newport County Campus. He hopes to create a learning-centered environment for the new campus, one that takes full advantage of the latest technology and of existing community resources. In addition to overseeing day-to-day operations of the campus, DeSanctis plans to actively engage the community in identifying and addressing the population's educational needs.

All advisory committee members are invited to visit with the new Associate Vice President at a community reception held in his honor at the Newport Housing Authority, One York Street, Newport, on Friday, Dec. 10 from 8 to 10 a.m. To confirm attendance and receive directions to the reception, please contact Public Relations Officer Laura Hart by phone at 825-1175 or by email at lhart@ccri.edu.

CCRI holds groundbreaking for Newport County Campus

10-28-2003
At a groundbreaking ceremony for the Community College of Rhode Island’s $12.4 million Newport County Campus, CCRI President Thomas D. Sepe addressed the 100+ guests assembled at the 5.5-acre site off Connell Highway by remarking, “Opening a comprehensive college campus in the East Bay will bring education and job training to individuals who may not otherwise have access to higher education.”

Slated to open in 2005, the campus will prove a boon to the area economy by providing existing and future businesses with a skilled workforce in their own backyard, said Sepe. Toward this end, CCRI representatives have spent the last five years surveying and interviewing East Bay business leaders in an effort to tailor the college’s curriculum to the community’s specific needs. Most recently, CCRI has launched a feedback form on its Newport Web site, www.ccri.edu/Newport, to solicit community input on education and training needs.

Other speakers at the event included Lt. Governor Charles Fogarty, Mayor Richard Sardella, Board of Governors for Higher Education Chair Frank Caprio and Commissioner of Higher Education Jack Warner.

Sepe also announced the creation of a 25-member Newport County Campus Advisory Committee, co-chaired by retired educator and former mayor Paul Gaines as well as by CCRI alumna and Bank of Newport Chief Operating Officer Sandra Pattie. The advisory committee, which includes members of key East Bay businesses and social service agencies, will serve as community ambassadors and advocates for the community college’s future campus. In addition to the main advisory committee, the college has assembled a development committee to help with future financial needs of the campus, and is in the process of tapping area educators to create a Newport County Campus educational advisory committee.

This latest capital project represents the realization of a 40-year-old plan by the RI General Assembly to create a four-location community college network—a network that will make higher education accessible to all Rhode Island residents. The Newport campus will be the fourth in a statewide network of community college campuses, including current CCRI locations in Warwick, Lincoln and Providence, and will be situated on land donated by the U.S. Navy.

The Shingle-Style, 65,000-square foot campus building designed by Newport Collaborative Architects, will feature a student services complex, an auditorium and a classroom/laboratory wing. DePasquale Building and Realty Company will oversee construction of the project. The Newport County Campus has been funded by a $10.9 million bond issue in 2000, with additional monies granted by the RI state legislature last summer.

Among the programs to be offered at the Newport County Campus are Nursing; rehabilitative health programs such as Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapist Assistant and Therapeutic Massage; career programs such as Business and Accounting, Computer Technology, Criminal Justice, Hospitality/Culinary and Human Services; liberal arts programs such as Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign Languages, Math, Physics, Psychology and Social Sciences; and a variety of non-credit training, community service and personal enrichment courses.

More than 1,000 students from the East Bay—Barrington, Bristol, Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, Tiverton and Warren—attend classes at either CCRI’s Newport satellite, located at Newport Hospital, or at one of the college’s main campuses in Warwick, Lincoln and Providence. However, while the statewide average of high school graduates enrolled in CCRI is 17 percent, the average of East Bay high school graduates enrolled at CCRI ranges between 5-15 percent, thereby demonstrating a compelling potential for growth. Sepe estimates the headcount enrollment for the Newport County Campus to climb to 2,000 after a single year of operation.
