Draft Statements of Mission, Vision and Core Values

June 2005

Part One: Our Mission

Please consider the purpose of a mission statement when reviewing the following mission statements.

A mission statement should define CCRI’s core purpose in terms of meeting "specific needs." When an organization defines its core purpose, it defines its reason for being. Thus, the mission statement becomes a powerful tool in guiding planning, decision making, and assessment.

Please rank each of the following three statements in relation to each other, using the terms "most preferred", "second most preferred" and "third most preferred" only one time each in the Mission category.

Mission Statement #1:

CCRI’s mission is to provide open access, affordable, learning-centered, post-secondary educational opportunities to assist Rhode Islanders in becoming successful students, citizens and employees and to contribute to the quality of life and economic development of our state.

Part Two: Our Vision

Please consider the purpose of a vision statement when reviewing the following vision statements.

A vision statement provides a picture of what the college would look like if it achieved its "ideal" future. Vision statements provide a context and sense of purpose for strategic planning. A clearly defined vision for CCRI will help the college focus on its central purpose.

Please edit each of the following five statements and/or add your own individual vision statement. The Vision Statement may ultimately include more than one of these statement components.

The Vision Statement should complete the phrase, "CCRI will be accomplishing its mission when it is..."

Part Three: Our Core Values

Please consider the purpose of identifying core values when reviewing the following Value statements.

Core values guide policy and day-to-day behaviors within an organization and therefore provide the foundation for the organization’s culture. Because values tend to endure over time they can serve as a reflection of the culture. In simple terms, organizational values and principles determine "what is important around here."
