Members in attendance: Ruth Barrington, Joanne Galliano, William Johnson, Nick Kamboures, Robert Melucci, Dennis Moore, Michelle O’Brien, Carol Panaccione, Lou Pullano and JoAnn Warren
Meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm.
The purpose of this meeting was to review Opening Day feedback and the latest statements selected by a sub-committee on 9/8/05, with the goal of developing revised statements, and concluding our work.
AA process for reviewing, editing and rewriting was established.
Committee members reviewed:
- the rankings and comments provided for each statement,
- statements from peer institutions,
- previously drafted statements,
- draft statements submitted by sub-committee,
- and the criteria for effective statements.
The concepts of passion and inspiration as well as the length of statements were discussed throughout the meeting. Throughout the re-drafting process, committee members went to the data to ensure input was considered.
Core Values were addressed first, the vision statement second and the mission statement last.
Redrafted statements will be circulated for further consideration and discussion.
Meeting adjourned at 3:30 pm.
Core Values
Core values were addressed first, as the college community in general, agreed with the values identified by the committee.
- Core Values statements were considered to be too long.
- The acronym of CCRI was viewed as too limiting.
- The values identified were deemed appropriate.
- The values should focus on excellence and quality.
The core values statement was simplified with an introductory statement and a listing of values.
As a student-centered organization, CCRI continually strives to reach the highest levels of quality by adhering to our institutional core values of:
-
Community
-
Diversity
-
Excellence
-
Integrity
-
Respect
-
Responsiveness
The Vision Statement
A lengthy discussion ensued as to the format and language of the vision statement.
- Statement too long, too wordy.
- Should the Vision statement be expressed in future tense or present tense, creating confusion about the opening statement - "...accomplish its mission when.."
- Needs to inspire.
- Bullet statements needed to re-ordered, deleted and/or added.
The vision statement was reduced to one sentence.
CCRI, a student-centered institution, empowers individuals to realize their own unique potential.
The Mission Statement
The mission statement was reviewed last and a lively discussion ensued as to what should be included in this statement. This was discussed at length. The purpose of a mission statement was reviewed, with an emphasis on what we do. Specific comments/suggestions presented below were discussed at length:
- Shorten the statement. Should be short enough to be quoted and remembered.
- Emphasize action.
- Reference to state, region supported by some, not by others.
- Should be more reflective of vision.
- Reference to workforce supported by some not by others.
- Simplify the statement, too many concepts addressed.
- Accessibility widely accepted.
The mission statement was reduced to one sentence.
