Electrician licensing exam prep available

April 15, 2013

The class will be held on two consecutive Saturdays for six hours each. There are two sessions to choose from: The first will meet on June 8 and 15 at CCRI’s Flanagan Campus in Lincoln and the second will meet July 6 and 13 at the college’s Knight Campus in Warwick. Each class will be led by a master electrician.

The state of Rhode Island gives journeyman’s exams throughout the year, so students can take the test shortly after they complete the review course.

Students will be prepared for all aspects of the journeyman’s exam. Topics of study will include: mathematical formulas, structure of the journeyman’s exam and all facets of the National Electrical Code.

“For 10 years, CCRI has provided the classroom instruction that electrical apprentices need,” said Emilio Colantonio, director of community services for the college’s Center for Workforce and Community Education. “This exam prep course is in response to a need that our instructors see for their students.”

The review courses are deliberately limited to a small number of students to encourage group discussion and guarantee each student individual attention from the instructor. They will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Colantonio said group discussion could be helpful for the apprentices, who have four years of work experience under their belts already. “They already know a lot,” he said. “They can help each other.”

All of CCRI’s instructors in the program are master electricians. Many of them are building or electrical inspectors in Rhode Island’s cities and towns.

The CCRI Electrician’s License Exam Preparation course costs $94 plus a $5 registration fee. You can register in person at the Center for Workforce and Community Education (CWCE) office on any of CCRI’s four campuses. Payment must be made at time of registration.

Potential students also may download a CWCE registration form and fax or mail it with a check, money order or credit card information (never send cash) to CCRI Center for Workforce and Community Education, 1762 Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln, RI 02865-4585. The fax number is 401-333-7237.

CWCE can be reached by phone at 401-825-2014 (Warwick),401-333-7070 (Lincoln), 401-455-6019 (Providence) or 401-851-1661 (Newport).
