CCRI Westerly satellite moving to high school
June 26, 2012
The Community College of Rhode Island’s Westerly satellite campus is moving to Westerly High School this fall, expanding its offerings in this newly renovated facility and offering a range of classes that will allow students to complete their associate degree in General Studies entirely at this campus.
Students can choose from about 30 courses this fall in subject areas such as oceanography, fire science, Italian, Spanish, health sciences, psychology, sociology, oral communication, writing, business and more. Also this fall, the college will pilot a program to offer three classes at an earlier time, 4:15 p.m., so that students can take two classes in one night and work toward completing their degrees faster. View the courses online.
CCRI will host an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 9, at the high school, located at 23 Ward Ave., Westerly. Please use the Federico Gym entrance. Participants can meet CCRI President Ray Di Pasquale, ask advisers about educational plans and career paths, speak with financial aid staff to learn how to pay for college and more. The college will waive its $20 application fee for those who apply that night.
“We are thrilled to return our satellite to Westerly High School, a top-notch facility that recently underwent a $30 million renovation,” said Di Pasquale. “This move will give CCRI students in this part of the state access to better resources and technology as well as allow us to offer more classes in varied subjects to meet the needs of our students.”
Many of the classes offered in Westerly are core classes or general education classes that can help students get started in their studies close to home before they finish their degree-specific classes offered at the college’s four campuses in Warwick, Newport, Providence and Lincoln. Students will be able to complete the requirements for an associate degree in General Studies completely at the Westerly campus and the college plans to offer the remaining required classes for a degree in General Business in the near future.
Those studying at other colleges and universities also might consider fulfilling some of their general requirements at the Westerly satellite at a lower cost, then transferring the credits to their own institutions.
