Boating Safety

Sail and powerboat owners can protect their families and friends by learning the how-to’s of boating safety. Major topics include: seamanship, navigation, radio procedures, piloting, legal and safety requirements, boat handling, and many others. For youthful operators of personal watercraft (wet bikes, jet skis, etc.), this course meets the state-mandated educational requirement. For all, an insurance discount may apply. Completion certificates will be awarded.  (Additional $30 fee is payable first night of class for book.)

Who needs to have a certificate of boating safety education?
  1. Any person born after January 1, 1988 who operates a vessel with a motor larger than 10 horsepower.

  2. Any person, regardless of age, who operates a personal watercraft (wave runner, jet ski, etc.)

Who is exempt from needing a certificate of boating safety education?
  1. A person who is operating a vessel under training and is being supervised by an adult, 18 years of age or older, who has met the requirements of this law.

  2. A person who holds a valid commercial vessel operator's license.

  3. Non-residents who have met their particular state's requirements.

  4. New residents of this state.  Allowed 60 days to meet requirements.

  5. Anyone who is renting a vessel through a boat livery or boat rental company.  Renter must watch a short instructional video and pass written exam prior to rental, both provided by the rental company.
