Old Proxy Server Directions

NOTE:  These directions have been superseded by the new proxy server directions as of September 2002.

Certain HELIN online resources (e.g., Academic Search Premier, Gale Literary Databases, PsycINFO) are restricted to the students, faculty, and staff of HELIN institutions.  To gain access to these resources from remote, off-campus locations (using your Internet Service Provider), you must first set your browser for HELIN Proxy Services.  Once you have done this, you will be prompted for your name and the barcode from your CCRI Library Card when you access a restricted online resource.  Please contact a CCRI Reference Librarian if you need assistance with proxy services.

Follow the directions for the particular browser and version that you use.  You should also make sure that your browser is set to accept cookies (this is the default setting).  AOL users: please see the notes at the end.

Notes for AOL Users

The default browser that comes with AOL may not support proxy services.  If it doesn't, your best option is to use Netscape.  Go to the Netscape Web site at http://www.netscape.com.  Locate, download, and install Netscape Navigator 4.08 (this is a browser only version of Netscape which downloads more quickly than other versions and works well with the proxy server).  Follow the directions for setting up Netscape Version 4+ for proxy services.  To use the proxy server, you will still connect to the Internet using the AOL browser.  After connecting, minimize the AOL browser and then use Netscape as your Web browser for accessing the library's subscription databases.
