Allison Petro
Allison started teaching English at CCRI in 2005, after teaching at URI for 12 years. Her background is in teaching ESL, writing and speech. In both ESL and general education courses, she focuses on developing students’ creativity and critical thinking skills. Students often comment on the energy and enthusiasm she brings to the classroom, as well as her patience and support for students who are struggling.
At URI, Allison worked with international teaching assistants in a variety of departments university-wide. She taught international graduate students to develop their language skills, teaching skills and cross-cultural knowledge, so they would be more effective in the classroom. Coordinating this program gave her the chance to think about effective teaching practices across the curriculum, as well as multiple assessment strategies to help undergraduates succeed, particularly in general education courses.
She also developed skills in assessing ESL students’ writing and speaking skills, combining standardized testing with in-house assessment tools to determine placement and evaluate students’ progress. In 2003, Allison began a long-term project to revitalize the ESL curriculum at URI, which included adding courses for credit, proposing courses for General Education credit, and writing learning outcomes.
At CCRI, Allison has continued her interest in teaching strategies and assessment. She serves on the General Education and Learning Evidence Committees. She is also part of the college-wide team that is considering what assessment tools to use for placement of ESL students. In her own courses, she has developed assessment instruments to determine if students are meeting the goals of each course.
Allison welcomes the chance to work with colleagues in a variety of departments at CCRI. Contact her if you are writing learning outcomes for courses or wondering about options for assessing students’ learning.
