Handbook for Staff and Student Assistant Positions

Introduction

The Department of Information Technology offers Staff Assistant and Student Assistant employment positions as a career development opportunity where participants gain valuable work experience and training as well as earned income.

This manual is intended as a training and reference guide regarding your work for the Department of Information Technology. Included in this manual is an overview of the policies and general guidelines that have been established for operating the Help Desk, Academic Computer Labs, and all classrooms with technology. It also includes your responsibilities and the rules which end users must abide by and a brief overview of the tasks you will be required to perform. This manual serves as your reference while you are employed with the Department of IT, therefore you are responsible for all the information contained in it.

Employment Requirements for Staff Assistant Positions

Staff assistant positions are NOT open to CCRI students.

You must attend the mandatory training before spring and fall semesters when offered.

We require all applicants to have a solid understanding of computer hardware and software.

You must also have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as good interpersonal skills.

You must be flexible in submitting hours of work availability. Your work schedule is built around the department’s needs (our facilities are open from 7:30am until 10pm Mon. – Thurs. and varies on weekends).

Employment Requirements for Student Assistant Positions

Be a registered CCRI student and carry at least 6 credit hours*.

Should be in good academic standing.

You must be flexible in submitting hours of work availability. Your work schedule is built around your class schedule but we require that a wide range of hours be submitted for scheduling consideration (our facilities are open from 7:30am until 10pm).

You must attend the mandatory training before spring and fall semesters when offered.

We require all applicants to have a good understanding of computer hardware and software. Academic Computer Lab aides must have satisfactorily completed Intro to Computing at CCRI.

You must also have solid communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as good interpersonal skills.

*If at any time during a semester a student is enrolled in less than 6 credits, fails to achieve their attempted course credits or is dropped for non-payment, employment will be terminated.

Mandatory Training

All Staff Assistants and Student Assistants are required to attend the mandatory training before fall and spring semesters begin when offered. If you have an emergency and can not attend, you must speak to your supervisor immediately.

Maximum number of hours for Staff Assistant positions is 19.5 hours per week.

Maximum number of hours for Student Assistant positions is 15 hours per week.

Application Forms

Several employment forms are available within the Information Technology Office (I-9, W-4, Bar of Claims, CCRI confidentiality statement). These forms must accompany the employee authorization form.

Applicants must also submit copies of documents, e.g. Social Security Card, License, Birth Certificate, etc., that are required by the I-9 form. A complete authorization form with the department head’s signature is required prior to authorization and approval.

Start Date of Employment

Applicants may begin work when their authorization has been processed and signed by Financial Aid and the Vice President’s designee. Supervisors will receive a copy of this approval. At that time, applicants will be notified when they may begin employment.

General Guidelines

Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude in communicating with others.

Assume personal responsibility for completing assignments on time. Demonstrate willingness to pitch-in to assist others when needed. Seek out expertise within the department to ensure the broadest perspective and highest quality in supporting our users.
